#10 Johns Hopkins Opens with 13-7 Win over GWU

BALTIMORE, MD - The #10 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team opened its 2007 season with a 13-7 win over George Washington Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field. Senior attack Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's) led the Blue Jays effort with four goals and three assists.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring quickly when junior Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) struck just 1:21 in on an assist from freshman Kim Dubansky (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh). Stamper's goal started a 5-0 run in the first nine minutes for Hopkins as the Jays took control early. Key struck twice, bookending goals around junior Kirby Houck (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) and fifth-year senior Sarah Walsh (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber).

George Washington finally answered at 9:43 when Kristina Harvery scored off a pass from Katelyn Honeyford. Kristin Harsch tallied just under four minutes later, making it a 5-2 game. Key answered with her third of the night but Megan Cratty answered right back for the Colonials. Key would score the final goal of the half, with 5:19 to play, making it a 7-3 game heading into the half.

George Washington came out firing in the second half, scoring twice in the first 7:17 to cut the Jays lead to 7-5. Hopkins responded with three goals in 1:41 to push out to a 10-5 lead. Freshman Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn School) got her first career goal to start the run, followed by strikes from junior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) and Stamper. The Colonials ended the run with goals from Kristin Karcsh and Harvey, but would get no closer as Houck, Stamper and Schrum all tallied in the final 12 minutes.

Sophomore Amelia Harris (Clifton, VA/J.W. Robinson) tied her career high making 11 saves in the win. Caitlin Garman made eight saves in the loss for the Colonials. Stamper finished with three goals for the Jays, while Schrum had four points on three assists and a goal. Karcsh led George Washington with four goals.

The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, February 24 when the George Mason Patriots visit Homewood Field. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
