Catawba Opens with 11-5 Win over Pfeiffer

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba held visiting Pfeiffer scoreless over the second half and claimed an 11-5 win in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. It was the opener for both teams.

Catawba grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes on goals by Kurt Green (San Diego, CA) and Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC). Pfeiffer would tie the game by the end of the quarter then an early goal by Green in the second period put the Tribe up 3-2.

Pfeiffer would come right back as Chuck Batchelor (Wilmington, NC) and Eddie Gourley (Damascus, MD) each tallied their second goals of the game to give the Falcons a 4-3 edge. Pfeiffer took a 5-4 lead to the break on Gourley's third goal with just 10 seconds before the half.

The Indians would pull ahead in the third quarter as Sean Sullivan (Rockville, MD) delivered the tying goal at the 9:30 mark, while Sean Duggan (Wantagh, NY) gave the Tribe the lead with 3:31 remaining with his second goal of the day.

Catawba picked up five goals in the final quarter to pull away. Sullivan tallied his second of the game with 6:59 left to push the edge to 8-5. Ben Huber (Westminster, MD) made 10 saves in goal for Catawba.

The Indians held a 45-22 edge in shots and had 44 ground balls to just 26 for the Falcons. Catawba also controlled the face-offs, winning 13 of 20.
