Tigers Use Second Half Run to Pull away from Elmira

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Colorado College scored five unasnwered goals to open the second half and went on to defeat Elmira College in a Division III women's lacrosse game on Wednesday afternoon at CC's Stewart Field. It was the season opener for both teams.

The Tigers scored four times in the first 4:48 of the second frame, including two goals from All-American attacker Kate Fitzgerald, to break a 4-4 tie and seize control of the game. Freshman attacker Marissa McGrann added her first collegiate goal with 15:58 remaining in the game before senior midfielder Kataya Outwater scored twice to pull the Soaring Eagles to within three goals at 9-6.

Senior midfielder Robin Harvey scored twice in the first half as the Tigers traded goals with Elmira, and it appeared CC would take a 4-3 lead into the break until senior midfielder Stephanie Walker struck for her second goal with just 4.6 seconds to go.

Malorie Stockwell kept the Eagles in the game by makaing 16 saves. Colorado College amassed a 35-15 advantage in shots, but found it hard to beat the Elmira's junior goalkeeper. Sophomore Jess Van Doren had six stops for the Tigers.

CC forced 12 turnovers and built a 21-13 advantage in ground balls.

Harvey led the Tigers with four goals and an assist, while Fitzgerald finished with three goals and set up two others. Senior midfielder Kerry O'Shaughnessy added a pair of goals for CC.

Outwater and Walker paced the Eagle attack with two goals apiece.

Colorado College will be idle until March 3 when they take on the Colorado State University club team in a doubleheader as part of a doubleheader with the men's teams. The Tigers next Division III game will be on March 12 against Bryn Mawr College.
