No. 1 North Carolina Dominates Oregon, 16-4
CHAPEL HILL – Three University of North Carolina players tallied three points apiece as the Tar Heels dominated Oregon, 16-4, on Friday night at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Freshman Kristen Taylor scored three goals, while freshman Megan Bosica and junior Erica LaGrow both had two goals and an assist for Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the nation in this week's Inside Lacrosse media poll. The Tar Heels (2-0) raced out to a 10-1 lead by halftime and cruised to the victory over the 20th-ranked Ducks (2-1).
In addition to the scoring of Kristen Taylor, LaGrow and Bosica, Carolina saw seniors Christina Juras, Melissa McCarthy and Jess Allen all score two goals in the game. The Tar Heels also got goals from Jenn Russell, Katie Brooks and Kelly Taylor. Meg Freshwater and Chrissy Rude tallied two assists apiece.
Kate Fleming, Jenny Browne, Alison Leiner and Theresa Waldron each scored one goal for Oregon, while Alicia Burkhart and former Tar Heel Brooke Dieringer each had an assist. Dieringer transferred to Oregon after the 2006 season and is a senior this year for the Ducks, whose head coach is former UNC assistant Jen Larsen. Former UNC All-ACC performer Beth Ames is an assistant coach under Larsen at Oregon.
Carolina scored the first two goals of the game when Allen scored unassisted and Juras scored off a Freshwater assist. The Ducks cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Leiner off an assist from Dieringer at the 20:12 mark of the first half. UNC went on an 11-0 run from that point to take a 13-1 lead with 19:28 remaining in the second half. Carolina closed the first half on an 8-0 run and then scored the first three goals after the break to put the game out of reach.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m. at Henry Stadium against Brown University.
