Canisius Defeats Host Saint Mary's, 14-12
A goal by Chelsea Martinez (Bethpage, N.Y.) capped a second-half rally as the Canisius College women's lacrosse team defeated Saint Mary's 14-12 Saturday afternoon to pick up its first win of the season.
Down 10-5 at halftime, the Griffs (1-1) scored the first six goals of the second half to take an 11-10 lead. The Gaels (0-2) responded with the next two goals to take a 12-11 advantage.
A goal by Lauren Walsh (Auburn, N.Y.) tied the game at 12-12 before the goal by Martinez with 9:35 left in the contest put the Griffs ahead for good. Ashley Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored her fourth goal of the game as time expired for the final margin.
Gray led the Griffs with the game-high four goals while the team had four players score two goals as well. Walsh had two assists to go along with her goal.
Saint Mary's tallied the first three goals of the game to take the early lead and was up by as many as seven goals when it took a 9-2 lead with 3:57 remaining in the first half. Canisius scored three goals before halftime to get within four, but the Gaels got a goal from Amber Lister with 2 seconds remaining in the half to go up by five. Rasheeda Brenton (Clarence, N.Y.) made 12 saves in net to pick up the win.
Canisius closes its three-game California trip against UC Davis on Sunday.
Game Notes: Brett Poissant (Syracuse, N.Y.) tallied her first collegiate goal after getting three assists on Thursday… Shannon Callahan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) recorded her first career point on an assist on Poissant's goal… Marissa Brown (Syracuse, N.Y.) also had her first career point on an assist.
