UC Davis Edges Canisius in Overtime, 13-12

DAVIS, Calif. -- A late steal by senior Megan O'Connor set the stage for freshman Olivia Jarem's game-winning goal with five second remaining in overtime, as UC Davis defeated Canisius College, 13-12, in non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse action at Aggie Field Sunday. O'Connor and Jarem were the Aggies' leading scorers, respectively scoring four and three goals in the win.

UC Davis evens its record at 1-1. The Golden Griffins drop to 1-2 overall. Sunday's game was the home opener for the Aggies.

Senior Alden Monger provided two goals and three assists for the Aggies. Gray led Canisius with three goals and an assist, while Chelsea Martinez had a 2-1-3 offensive chart.

O'Connor checked the ball loose from Canisius midfielder Ashley Gray with less than 15 seconds remaining in the overtime period, collected the ball and sprinted to the Aggies' attacking third. Moments later, Monger assisted Jarem for the winning goal.

Neither team led by more than two goals at any point in the tightly battled contest. The Griffs took a 4-2 lead after junior Eric Nasca converted her eight-meter attempt at the 8:32 mark, then Martinez won the ensuing draw and set up Gray for a goal just 17 seconds later. An unassisted goal by Canisius senior Amanda Marts made it 5-3 with 13:13 remaining in the first.

UC Davis responded with a 3-0 run to take a 6-5 lead, getting a goal and an assist from both Jarem and Monger. Lauren Walsh and Marissa Brown then scored back-to-back goals in the 28th and 30th minutes, respectively, giving the Griffs a 7-6 halftime edge.

O'Connor tied the goal in the opening seconds of the second half, taking control of her own draw and marching half the field for an unassisted goal. However, Gray answered back less than two minutes later to take back the lead at 8-7. Both teams traded goals through the second period until O'Connor's left-handed strike tied the game at 10-10, then Monger and junior Katie McGovern teamed up for a transition goal at 50:18, giving the Aggies their first lead of the half.

CC attacker Whitney Card had the last goal in regulation, hitting an eight-meter attempt with 6:06 remaining. Card had a chance to score a go-ahead goal on the next draw, but Aggie goalkeeper Hilary Harkins made the stop with one of her 12 saves.

Gray struck first with 1:05 remaining in the first overtime period, helped by a key save by Griffin goalkeeper Rasheeda Brenton on the defensive end. However, O'Connor won the next draw, setting the stage for Eri Ichikawa's equalizer with 0:48 left. Harkins stopped an Awehiyo Thomas shot early in the second OT period, then O'Connor stripped Gray of the ball a minute later to set the stage for Jarem's winning goal.

The Aggies continue their three-game homestand with a game against LeMoyne on Tuesday.
