Catawba Falls to Wheeling Jesuit, 6-5
SALISBURY, NC -- Dennis McKenna scored three goals to lead Wheeling Jesuit to a 6-5 win over host Catawba in men's lacrosse action on Monday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Cardinals with their opener, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-2.
Catawba jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter on a man-up goal by Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, FL) at the 13:52 mark of the period. McKenna tallied his first goal of the game with 7:10 remaining before the half and John Miller scored the tying goal just 2:07 before the break.
Nick Desper (Carrboro, NC) put the Indians back on top with his second goal of the game with 1:42 to go, but Joe Idone answered just 30 seconds later to send the teams to the half tied at 4-4. McKenna would put the Cardinals on top with 2:51 left in the third quarter then gave Wheeling Jesuit a 6-4 lead on his final goal with just 16 seconds left.
Mike Dolesh (Aquasco, MD) brought the Tribe within a goal on his second tally with seven seconds remaining. Catawba won the ensuing face-off, but were unable to get off a shot. Desper added an assist to go with his two goals for Catawba.
The Cardinals held a 34-20 edge in shots. Ben Huber had 13 saves for Catawba, while Joe Sims had eight saves for WJU after entering the game early in the second quarter.
