#12 Mary Washington Tops Sweet Briar, 18-1

Sweet Briar lacrosse opened the 2007 season Tuesday, suffering an 18-1 loss at the hands of the 12th-ranked University of Mary Washington. Vixen Julie Sellers '07 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) prevented the shutout at the 41-minute mark with a free position goal.

For the Eagles, senior Kaitlyn Barker and junior Caitlin Erickson led the way with four goals apiece in the game. Senior goalie Emily Fitzpatrick was busy in the cage for Sweet Briar, stopping 13 shots in the game.

The Vixens hit the road this weekend with games at Virginia Wesleyan and Christopher Newport. Sweet Briar opens conference play against the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins Saturday at 1:00 p.m. followed Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Christopher Newport.

SWEET BRIAR, VA - The 12th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Sweet Briar College, 18-1, on Tuesday in Sweet Briar, VA, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Senior midfielder Meaghan O'Leary tied the UMW school record with seven assists in the game. The Eagles used four goals each from junior Caitlin Erickson and senior Kaitlyn Barker, with Julia Milner and Brittany Butler each scoring two goals apiece.

The Eagles outshot the Vixen, 42-3. Junior Merdith Deitrick had one save without allowing a goal in 30 minutes, and sophomore Helena Polites allowed one goal in 30 minutes. The Eagles will visit second-ranked Gettysburg College on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
