No. 7 Salisbury Sails by Virginia Wesleyan, 22-2
SALISBURY, Md. - The seventh-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team handled Virginia Wesleyan College 22-2 in a non-conference game at home Wednesday afternoon.
Salisbury (3-0) jumped out to a 10-0 lead 14 minutes into the game and never looked back. Senior Stephanie Shores started the Gulls off with her first goal less then two minutes into the game and continued her dominance throughout the first half. She finished with a game high six points (five goals, one assist) all coming in the opening half.
Junior Sue Ackermann matched Shores' six points with her three goals and three assists. Senior Katie Simmons contributed three goals of her own to the Sea Gull cause. Two of Simmons' goals came 58 seconds apart with the first goal scored at the 21:42 mark in the second half.
Senior Natalie Degele (one goal, two assists) had three points in today's game while five different Sea Gulls tallied two-point games including seniors Ani Khatchatoorian, Kelly Mulligan, junior Alexis Morrell, sophomore Jessica Chmielewski and freshman Kim Cudmore.
Virginia Wesleyan (0-3) capitalized on their free position shot opportunity when KC Marchwicki got the Marlins on the board with 13:13 remaining in the first half to cut the SU lead to nine, 10-1. VWC got its last score of the day with 0:33 remaining in the first half when Jillian Boyd scored an unassisted goal. Salisbury led 15-2 at the break and outscored the Marlins 7-0 in the second half.
SU plays at home again on Saturday, March 3, at 1:00 p.m. against Capital Athletic Conference opponent York (Pa.) College. This will be Salisbury's first conference game of the season.
