Vermont Falls to UMass, 13-8, in 2007 Opener
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UMass Minutewomen used a late run of five goals to post a 13-8 victory at Vermont in the 2007 season opener for the Catamounts at Moulton Winder Field on Wednesday afternoon. Massachusetts improves to 2-1 on the year, while Vermont begins with an 0-1 record.
"This was a good overall performance for our first game," said Vermont head coach Jen Johnson. "We did a lot of good things, but had some fundamental breakdowns and UMass capitalized on them. Despite the breakdowns we competed and played with a lot of heart today and I was pleased with the effort."
The Minutewomen opened the game with three straight goals and held an 8-4 advantage at the half, but the Catamounts came out strong in the second half to cut the margin to one, 8-7. UMass answered with a 5-1 run over the final 9:22, sparked by a free position shot by Samantha Sepulveda to go on to earn the victory.
Holly Drown and Kathleen Typadis scored three goals each to lead Massachusetts. Drown also recorded 10 draw controls for the Minutewomen. Lauren McCarthy played all 60 minutes in goal and posted three saves to earn the win.
Seven different scorers netted a goal for Vermont, led by sophomore Tori Wasson's (Lake Forest, Ill.) pair. Sophomore Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario) added one goal, two assists and three draw controls for Vermont. Meaghan Hanley (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and freshman Ali Trainor (Severn, Md.) split time in net, each making six saves.
Vermont returns to action on Saturday and Sunday facing Canisius and Niagara in Buffalo, N.Y. UVM takes on Canisius on Saturday at 1:00pm and will face Niagara at Canisius on Sunday at 12:00pm. Vermont's next home game is slated for Wednesday, March 7 versus Siena at 3:00pm. Admission is free to all regular season home games at Moulton Winder Field this season.
GAME NOTES: UMass entered the game receiving votes in the InsideLacrosse.com poll ... UMass dominated the draw controls, 18-5 and out shot Vermont 30-20 ... Alison Haigh and Sara Buxton registered their first career goals for Vermont in the game.

Sophomore Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.) scored a hat trick and recorded 10 draw controls to lead the Minutewomen. UMass improves to 2-1 on the season, while Vermont falls to 0-1.
Along with Drown, junior Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) also recorded a hat trick - the 15th of her career. With her three goals, she is now just one shy of cracking the all-time career goals-scored list at UMass. She also continued her scoring streak to 27 straight games.
The Minutewomen opened the game with a 3-0 run and led 8-4 at halftime. The UMass defense held the Catamounts scoreless for the first 7:51 of the game.
Vermont came out strong in the second half scoring the first three goals pulling within one, 8-7.
Senior Samantha Sepulveda (Freeport, N.Y.) scored on a free position attempt with 9:22 to play sparking the 5-0 run to put the game away.
Sophomores Julie Pasquantonio (Plainville, Mass.) and Claire Mancini (Hillsborough, Calif.) posted their first career goals to close out the UMass scoring on the day.
The Minutewomen will next face Harvard on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
