No. 13 St. Mary's Tops Washington College, 12-7
St. Mary's City, MD – The 13th-ranked Seahawks of St. Mary's (Md.) College posted a 12-7 victory over the Washington (Md.) College Shorewomen in SMCM's home-opener Wednesday afternoon. The Seahawks were led by senior midfielder Danielle Miller's (Montville, NJ/Montville) hat trick and assist.
The two squads traded goals for the game's first six goals as the contest was knotted at 3-3 following St. Mary's sophomore midfielder Allie Zerhusen's (Cockeysville, MD/The Park School) unassisted goal at 8:56. However, the Seahawks turned it up a notch as they outscored Washington, 4-1, in the half's final 7:17 to take a 7-4 lead at intermission. Junior defender Elizabeth Northfield (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) paced SMCM at halftime with two goals, while the Shorewomen's senior attacker Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) had two as well for Washington.
Washington never got closer than 9-6 at 14:23 when sophomore attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College [DC]) completed a pass from freshman Allie Hanzsche (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales). The Seahawks finished the game on a 3-1 run as sophomore midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) had a goal and an assist.
Miller paced SMCM with nine ground balls and five draw controls. Carrier finished the afternoon with two goals and two assists, while Zerhusen and Northfield each had two. Senior goalie Melissa Puzak (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) improved her mark to 2-1 as Puzak turned away eight shots and caused four turnovers.
As a team, the Seahawks out-shot Washington, 29-19, and held a 23-16 advantage on ground balls. St. Mary's also won the draw control war with a 15-6 margin. Jakub ended the contest with a hat trick, while senior Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) made 10 saves and scooped up four ground balls in the loss for Washington.
The Seahawks will look to extend the win streak to two when St. Mary's entertains No. 15 Dickinson College on Saturday at 12 noon in Seahawk Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 2-1 overall with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 0-1 with the loss.
Elizabeth Northfield snapped a 4-4 tie with 4:43 remaining in the opening half to begin the Seahawks five-goal spurt. The hosts made it 7-4 with four seconds remaining in the first half on a goal by Danielle Miller. St. Mary's capped the run with a goal by Allie Zerhusen with 24:38 left in the tilt on a free position shot. The Shorewomen cut the deficit to 9-6 with 14:23 to go on attacker Suzie Jakub's (University Park, MD/St. John's College (DC) second goal of the contest, but Washington College could draw no closer.
Washington College got on the board first 3:48 into the contest when senior midfielder Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) netted her first goal of the season. After the Seahawks took a 2-1 lead, the Shorewomen answered with the next two goals to grab a 3-2 lead with 12:30 to go in the first half on tallies by Jakub and senior attack Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) respectively. Beane knotted the game at 4-4 on a unassisted goal with 5:59 to go in the first half.
