No. 6 Washington College Cages the Wolverines, 10-6
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) scored four goals and assisted on another as sixth-ranked host Washington College topped visiting Wesley College, 10-6, tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 1-0 by winning their season opener, while Wesley fell to 1-1 with the loss.
The Shoremen jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter and a 6-1 advantage at halftime. Washington extended the lead to 7-1 when junior attackman Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) scored off an assist from Kielek with 12:56 left in the third quarter. Wesley then mounted a rally as the Wolverines netted three unanswered goals to cut the lead to 7-4. Dan Skeels scored with 11:05 left in the third and Luke Moeller followed with a goal off an assist from Nick Pisacano with 4:49 remaining. Wesley opened the fourth quarter scoring as Skeels scored an extra-man goal off a Bivins assist with 14:35 left in the game.
The Shoremen put an end to the run when junior midfielder Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) fired in a putback off his own shot with 12:00 left to make it 8-4. Wesley twice cut the lead back to three goals, but the Shoremen answered each time. Skeels scored another extra-man goal off a Bivins assist at 9:40, but Kielek answered with a goal off a feed from junior midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) 28 seconds later. Moeller then scored off a Pisacano assist at 8:24, but Generazio ended the scoring with a man-down goal with 7:32 on the clock.
Sutter joined Kielek as the Shoremen's multiple-goal scorers in the game, tallying two goals and one assist. Generazio added one goal and one assist, while junior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) handed out two assists. Junior midfielder Mike Hughes (Pasadena, MD/Mount St. Joseph) also had one goal and one assist for Washington, while Kirby and sophomore midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) each scored one goal.
Skeels led the Wolverines with three goals, while Moeller netted two goals. Pisacano had one goal and two assists, while Bivins finished with a pair of helpers. Sophomore goalie J. Graham Fadden (New Canaan, CT/Westminster) made nine saves in his first collegiate start for Washington. Jim McCleaft had 14 saves for the Wolverines. The Shoremen outshot the Wolverines, 41-30, including a 26-13 margin in the first half, and maintained a 41-28 advantage on ground balls. Washington won 12 of the game's 18 face-offs; Hughes and O'Connor each won four of their five face-off attempts.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. home game against fifth-ranked R.I.T.
