Elizabethtown Falls 8-7 to McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. --- A goal with three seconds before the end of regulation time lifted McDaniel College to an 8-7 win over Elizabethtown College in Westminster Thursday evening. The visiting Blue Jays dropped to 1-1 overall with the loss, while McDaniel improved to 1-0 with the season-opening win.

The score was tied 2-2 at halftime. Halfway through the second half, Elizabethtown held a 6-3 lead. McDaniel rallied with a 4-0 run over the next 10:30 to take a 7-6 lead. With 3:08 left in the game, Elizabethtown's Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) scored to tie the game 7-7. The game appeared headed to overtime until, with three seconds left on the clock, McDaniel's Shaena Smith (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) scored to give the Green Terror the win.

Foley led Elizabethtown in scoring with four goals and in draw controls with three, while Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled) scored a goal and had an assist. First-year students Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) and Alisha Sangrey (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) each scored a goal for Elizabethtown.

Defensively, Danielle Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) led the Blue Jays in caused turnovers with five and tied for the team lead in ground balls with four, and Ford had three caused turnovers. Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) also had four ground balls, and she had two caused turnovers. Goalie Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) made 11 saves in the Blue Jay net as McDaniel out-shot Etown 28-21.

McDaniel's Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) led the Green Terror in scoring with five goals, and Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) led the team in assists with two. McDaniel goaltender Megan Millhausen (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) made 10 saves.
