Douthett Propels No. 6 Dartmouth to Victory

HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) poured in seven goals, leading the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team to a 19-9 victory over New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.

The Big Green improved to 2-0 on the season as Douthett scored the most goals by a Dartmouth player since Jen Newitt '02 had seven against Colgate on March 17, 2002.

UNH's Beth Sabiston scored first at 24:47 of the opening half, but it was all Dartmouth after that. Douthett potted her first on a free position shot less than a minute later to tie the game, and the Big Green raced out to a 10-5 lead at halftime.

For the Wildcats (1-1), Sarah Von Bargen, Shaunna Kaplan and Moira Talbot each scored twice.

"Overall I was pretty impressed with our attack," said Dartmouth coach Amy Patton, "and I think our defense today went through some growing pains. I think that's the best way to put it."

Dartmouth lost six starters to graduation off the 2006 team that earned NCAA runner-up honors. "You could see our youth there in the last five minutes," added Patton. "It's a reminder that we are young. I was really happy overall with our attack today. The looks that we got, we put them away. And defensively we're young, and I think we have a lot of work to do. We need to grow from last week to this week, and at times, I thought we did today, and at times, I was reminded that we are young."

For Dartmouth, senior Margo Duke (Englewood, Colo.) had an outstanding afternoon, too. She scored a career-high four goals, including three in a row less than two minutes apart in the second half.

In the nets, Big Green freshman Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) had four saves, getting credit for the win while playing 52:20. Freshman Chelsea Kirk (Hunt Valley, Md.) finished up in relief for the first action of her collegiate career.

For UNH, Natalie Jones and Ashley Milley split time as Jones was credited with four saves.

On Wednesday, March 7, Dartmouth has its first road game, traveling to Massachusetts for a 4:00 p.m. start.

UNH, which opened the 2007 season Tuesday with a 14-13 overtime road win against College of the Holy Cross, is now 1-1. Dartmouth is 2-0.

The Wildcats took a short-lived 1-0 lead at 24:47 when Beth Sabiston (Bay Shore, N.Y.; 1g, 1a) converted an Ashley Durepo (Concord, N.H.) pass into a goal.
