#16 Hofstra Rally Falls Short at #17 Boston Univ.

BOSTON - The No. 17 Boston University women's lacrosse team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season, and head coach Liz Robertshaw's first win as BU's head coach, 14-10, over the No. 17 Hofstra Pride (1-1) Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

Junior Lauren Morton (Glenside, Pa.) led BU's attack with five goals. Sophomore Sarah Dalton (Cornwall, Vt.) added four goals. Junior Jenna Golden (Suffern, N.Y.) made eight saves in net for BU. Becky Thorn recorded a hat trick to lead the Pride.

The Terriers scored eight of the first nine goals of the game, taking an 8-1 lead at 12:56 in the first half. BU scored on three free position attempts in that span and received goals from five different players. The Terriers held a 9-3 advantage at the half before the Pride mounted a comeback. After Dalton struck just 1:19 into the second frame, Hofstra posted five of the next six goals to cut the Terrier lead to three, 11-8, with 13:08 remaining. But a pair of Morton goals sandwiched freshman Traci Landy's second goal of the game extended BU's lead back to 6, 14-8, and sealed the win for the Terriers.

BU returns to action on Wednesday, March 14 when the Terriers travel to Maryland to face the Greyhounds of Loyola (Md.) at 4:00 p.m.

Boston, MA * #17 Boston University jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 8-1 and never looked back in posting a 14-10 decision over #16 Hofstra at Nickerson Field on Saturday afternoon. Hofstra got a team-high three goals from senior midfielder Becky Thorn.

The loss evens Hofstra's record at 1-1 on the season, following its season-opening 13-8 victory over Loyola (MD) this past Monday. The Terriers improved to 1-1 this season after dropping its season opener to Massachusetts.

Sarah Dalton scored twice in the first eight minutes of the contest to help Boston University open up the four-goal advantage. After senior midfielder Casey McGrath got Hofstra on the board with a free-position goal at the 21:06 mark, the Terriers added to their lead with four straight goals to lead 8-1 with 12:56 remaining in the first half.

The Pride would close the gap to 8-3 with goals from red-shirt freshman attack Kendall Gray and junior attacker Kelly McGrath, but Boston University took a 9-3 lead into the break after McKinley Curro scored with 6:48 left before intermission.

Trailing by seven (11-4) with 20:49 left in the second half, Hofstra began to mount a rally from its largest deficit of the contest. The Pride would score four straight, including two apiece from sophomore attacker Jen Bach and Thorn, to get within 11-8 with just over 13 minutes remaining.

That would be as close as Hofstra would get, though, as the Terriers scored three straight at that point to take a 14-8 lead and would end up with a 14-10 win after sophomore midfielder Lauren Whitcomb and senior attacker Kimberly Hillier closed the scoring in the contest.

Hillier's goal with just over a minute left allowed her to extend her scoring streak to 37 games. Thorn and Bach were the only players for the Pride to tally multiple goals as five other players notched single goals in the game for Hofstra. Whitcomb had a strong day in draw controls as she posted a game-high six, while adding a game-high two caused turnovers. Junior defender Kerrin Fraser led Hofstra with two ground balls.

Lauren Morton led BU's attack with five goals. Dalton added four goals. Jenna Golden made eight saves in net for Boston University and led the way with three ground balls.
