No. 2 Gettysburg Handles Washington & Lee, 14-5

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The second-ranked Gettysburg men's lacrosse team had 10 different goal-scorers in posting a 14-5 win over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Bullets (1-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Generals dented the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) with 7:54 remaining in the second quarter. Gettysburg then went on to score the game's next four goals and carried a 9-1 lead into halftime.

W&L (1-2) opened the second-half scoring on an man-up goal by St. John off an assist from sophomore attackman Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson), but again the Bullets answered with a pair of goals to go up 11-2 in cruising to their second-straight victory over the Generals.

St. John led W&L with three goals, while Skeen contributed one goal and a pair of assists. Senior goalkeeper Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played nearly 58 minutes in goal and posted 15 saves.

Junior attackman Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep) paced Gettysburg with two goals and one assist. Senior midfielders Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), Jimmy Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and Ted Leonard (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) added two goals apiece. Senior goalie Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola) played all 60 minutes between the pipes and recorded five saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Washington College for a 7:00 pm contest.

LEXINGTON, Va. – No. 2 Gettysburg scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back in a 14-5 non-conference win against Washington & Lee at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bullets saw 13 different players record at least one point in the season-opening victory.

Gettysburg (1-0) got a team-high three points from junior attackman Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep [Md.]), who had two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Ted Leonard (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) matched his career high with two goals, and senior midfielders Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and Jimmy Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) each tacked on a pair of scores. For Gates, the two goals mark his personal best. Preseason first-team All-America goalie Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) made five saves to earn the win.

The Generals (1-2) got a game-high three goals from sophomore midfielder Harry St. John. Classmate Tim Skeen added a goal and two assists from his attack position. The Bullets held a 42-23 advantage in shots, forcing senior netminder Chris Lalli to make 15 saves.

Gettysburg sophomore attackman Rob Triplett (McLean, Va./McLean) put his team up for good with a goal off an assist by senior defenseman Steve Hurst (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) at the 10:13 mark of the first quarter. Just 3:28 later, the Bullets had a 4-0 advantage. Freshman midfielder Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored his first career goal, unassisted, with 8:02 remaining in the opening frame. Gates also scored unassisted, and Freehill added a man-up strike during the run.

The Bullets picked up where they left off in the second quarter when Leonard scored his first goal at 9:10 with McGrath assisting. St. John put Washington & Lee on the board with an unassisted goal at the 7:54 mark, but Gettysburg countered with another four-goal run to close the first half with a 9-1 lead.

The Bullets’ seventh goal of the afternoon was scored while the team was shorthanded. Junior midfielder Stu Whelehan (Perry Hall, Md./Loyola Blakefield) set up senior midfielder Andrew Mavraganis (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) for Gettysburg’s first man-down goal in nearly four years. The last was scored by Brian Pryor on Mar. 26, 2003 in a 7-6 victory against Middlebury.
