No. 15 Syracuse Edged by No. 9 Virginia, 10-8
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 15th-ranked Orange lost a hard-fought battle with No. 9 Virginia on Saturday, 10-8. Sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) led the Orange with five points on three goals and two assists.
Freshman Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) also recorded three goals and senior Ashley Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) added two goals. Senior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) and freshman Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) both recorded one assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amber Pardee-Hill (Lewiston, N.Y.) recorded a career-best 13 saves in the cage.
The Orange (1-2) opened the contest strong with Rowan scoring two goals in the first two minutes to take the early advantage. After Virginia (3-0) responded with a goal, DePetris set up Quillinan for her first goal of the afternoon. After Virginia cut the SU lead to one, Pike notched her first goal with 19:03 remaining to give Syracuse a two-goal advantage, 4-2. Virginia scored the next three goals and the Orange would not score the remainder of the half as the two teams headed into intermission with the Cavaliers leading, 5-4.
Syracuse quickly reclaimed its advantage, scoring the first two goals of the second period. Pike opened the scoring with a free-position goal and Quillinan followed it up with her second goal of the day. Virginia scored the next two goals to grab the lead but Rowan quickly responded with her third goal of the afternoon to tie the game at seven. The Cavaliers scored the next two goals to take a 9-7 lead but Quillinan pulled the Orange within one by scoring her third goal of the afternoon with 2:59 remaining. Syracuse could not gain possession after that point as Virginia added a goal to win, 10-8.
The Orange held the advantage in draw controls, 11-9, but the Virginia won eight of 10 draws in the second half. Syracuse converted only six successful clears of 14 attempts during the contest.
The Orange remains in Syracuse for its next game, squaring off against Binghamton on Tuesday. First draw is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Virginia women's lacrosse team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to start the game to take a 5-4 lead at the break, and then rallied again down one with 21:33 to play to score five of the final seven goals of the game for the 10-8 victory over Syracuse on the road. Kaitlin Duff led the Cavaliers (3-0) with four draw controls, including three of the final five of the game, which were all won by Virginia. Jess Wasilewski had a goal and two assists in the 5-2 run in the first half, and then Blair Weymouth scored Virginia's final two goals of the game for the Cavaliers.
After Syracuse's Katie Rowan scored twice in the first two minutes of the game to spot the Orange to a 2-0 lead, the Cavaliers gained control and set up an offense that saw a shot saved by the SU keeper. On the clear, however, the Orange ran out of bounds behind the cage and Virginia took control. Ashley McCulloch passed the ball to Wasilewski, who fed Brittany Kalkstein for a quickstick goal at 24:17 to get the Cavaliers on the board. Halley Quillinan scored the first of her three goals as she cut down to the cage to give SU another two-goal lead.
Virginia gained control and advanced the ball into their offensive third where the Cavaliers drew two 8-meter attempts before SU was whistled for three seconds. Megan O'Malley converted the free position shot to pull Virginia within one again at 19:41. Ashley Pike gave the Orange another two-goal lead as she scored off a Rowan pass 38 seconds later to give SU a 4-2 lead.
