UMass Routs Harvard for Best Start Since 2003

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.) scored five goals and junior Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) scored three and added three assists as UMass (3-1) routed Harvard 18-7 on Saturday at Jordan Field. The Minutewomen clicked offensively outshooting the Crimson 44-to-18 for the game as eight different players scored. In the first half, UMass used a 9-0 run to take an eventual 14-3 halftime lead. With her three goals today, Typadis becomes the 10th all-time leader in career goals at UMass with 90 in 39 games. At 3-1, the Minutewomen are off to their best start since the 2003 season.

After starting the season with a tough loss to Holy Cross, UMass has rattled off three straight wins gaining attention nationally as the Minutewomen received five votes in last week's InsideLacrosse.com Top 20 poll which effectively ranked them 24th. In those wins, UMass has outscored its opponents 44-26.

Along with Drown and Typadis, sophomore Meghan Reddy (Salem, N.H.) tallied three goals and an assist as well. After scoring just eight goals all last season, Drown has 11 in just four games this season. Typadis also had two draw controls today which moved her into sixth all-time at UMass with 65 for her career.

The six points for Typadis was a career-high for a game as were Drown's five goals and Reddy's four points. Typadis extended her scoring streak to 28 consecutive games and recorded her 16th career hat trick and third in as many games. Senior keeper Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) made three saves in 37 minutes, 30 seconds of work to pick up the win. The 18 goals scored today was the most ever against Harvard in 30 all-time meetings between the two schools.

Harvard led early 2-1 in the first seven minutes of the game before UMass ripped off nine unanswered goals in a 13 minute span. Typadis set up the first two goals of that drive finding junior Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.) and Reddy as UMass took its first lead, 3-2. Kaitlin Martin ended the Crimson scoring drought with an unassisted goal before UMass closed the half with four more goals including Typadis' second of the game just before time expired.

UMass scored four more times to open the second half capped off by sophomore Claire Mancini's (Hillsborough, Calif.) strike after senior Erica Shapiro (Norfolk, Mass.) intercepted a Harvard pass on a clear attempt giving the Minutewomen an 18-3 lead. Harvard (1-1) scored the final four goals of the game for the final 18-7 score.

The first half was all UMass who held a 29-to-7 shot advantage and a 12-to-5 groundball advantage. Harvard committed 28 fouls to just 13 for UMass. That gave UMass 16 free position shots of which the Minutewomen converted five.

UMass will next face No. 8 Dartmouth on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the home season-opener. Admission is free to all.
