No. 14 Dickinson Tops No. 13 St. Mary's, 17-11
St. Mary's City, MD – Attackers Jena Boccetti (Hockessin, DE) and Amy Jennings (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) combined for 14 points in leading visiting 14th-ranked Dickinson College to a 17-11 non-conference victory over No. 13 St. Mary's (Md.) College in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
Boccetti finished the contest with a game-high five goals and two assists, while Jennings tallied two goals and dished out a game-high five assists.
After freshman Lexi Kob (Collegeville, PA) put Dickinson (1-0) on the scoreboard first at 27:53, the Seahawks rattled off four unanswered goals including a hat trick from sophomore midfielder Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, MD/The Park School).
The Red Devils' senior midfielder Laura Williams (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School) halted SMCM's 4-0 run as she completed a pass from Jennings at 15:08. The two teams split the next four goals before Boccetti took a feed from Jennings at 8:26 for her first goal of the game, pulling Dickinson within 6-5. But Zerhusen's free position goal at 2:15 gave St. Mary's a 7-5 lead at halftime.
It was all Dickinson in the second half as the Red Devils outscored SMCM, 12-4, in the half. The Seahawks' last lead was 10-9 at 12:53 when senior midfielder Katy Perry (Hingham, MA/Hingham) notched her seventh goal of the season.
Boccetti's second goal of the contest just eight seconds later knotted the game at 10-10 and was the first of five straight Dickinson goals.
The Seahawks' sophomore midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) snapped the 5-0 run with her 17th goal of the year at 4:18 to get SMCM within 14-11. But the Red Devils recorded the game's final three goals in a span of 2:50 for the 17-11 final.
Williams ended the game with a hat trick and an assist for Dickinson, while freshman midfielder Alyssa Crellin (Little Compton, RI) added two goals and two assists. Senior goalie Gabby Joffie (Jamaica, NY) picked the season-opening win with six stops.
Zerhusen finished the day with a career-high four goals, while Perry had three and Carrier contributed two goals and two assists. Senior Melissa Puzak (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) turned away 15 shots.
Dickinson out-hustled SMCM in shots (37-20), ground balls (26-14), and draw controls (17-13).
The Seahawks hope to get back in the win column when SMCM resumes Capital Athletic Conference play in Washington, DC against Catholic University on March 6 at 4:00.
