Burke Leads Connecticut Upset of No. 18 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. (March 4, 2007) - Shannon Burke (Camillius, N.Y.) tallied a school-record 10 points off six goals and four assists as the University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team defeated Stanford, 16-10, Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field. With the win, the Huskies improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Cardinal dip to 1-4.

Burke's performance on the attack was the most productive UConn showing since Laurie McCarthy earned nine points against Canisius on May 2, 1998, scoring four goals and five assists.

The senior midfielder, who has now scored in 41 straight games, led the balanced Husky attack that featured four players with multi-goal games. Fellow seniors Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Tori Joel (Bel Air, Md.) each earned hat tricks, while sophomore Kim McGinty (Huntington, N.Y.) put up the first two-goal outing of her career.

Stanford jumped out to the early lead, but UConn fired back six of the game's next seven goals to pull ahead 6-2 with 12:41 to play in the first half. Link and Joel each scored two goals during this stretch, with Joel knocking back a free position opportunity before converting on an assist from Burke less than a minute later.

With the four-goal margin, the Cardinal cut the deficit to three with the first of three tallies by Daphne Patterson at the 11:37 mark. They would bring the score to within three on three more occasions, but were unable to pull any closer throughout the remainder of the game.

Coming out of the intermission with an 8-5 advantage, the Huskies quickly spread the lead to 12-6 within a span of 1:35, their largest lead of the day. Four different Huskies found the back of the net during the run with Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.) capping off the scoring spree with her first goal of the season at 26:22.

Stanford cut the lead to 12-8, sparking a three-goal burst from Burke with the help of two assists by Link. The duo teamed up for a total of four goals on the day, illustrating the prowess that accounts for over 55 percent of the team's total offense this season.

The Huskies continue their Spring Break trip through California with a game against UC Davis Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. (EST). UConn is 1-0 all-time against the Aggies, defeating them 14-3 on Mar. 9, 2005.
