No. 14 St. Mary's (Md.) Falls 6-5 to Catholic
Washington, DC – Jackie Lodge took a feed from Jackie Getty at the 10:04 mark in the second half and fired in the eventual game-winning goal in Catholic University's 6-5 victory over No. 14 St. Mary's (Md.) College Tuesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.
Catholic (3-1, 1-0 CAC) shutdown the Seahawk offense in the second half, holding St. Mary's to only four shots and no goals as the Cardinals went on a 4-0 run. CUA started the half with two consecutive, unassisted goals from Jackie Seward.
Marcy Cuneo's second free position goal of the game knotted the contest at 5-5.
The Seahawks (2-3, 1-1 CAC) opened up the game with a 2-0 lead at 18:27 behind back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill). Katie Bitonti put Catholic on the scoreboard with a free position goal at 14:51.
St. Mary's fired in three straight goals, including a pair from senior midfielder Danielle Miller (Montville, NJ/Montville), to go up 5-1 in the contest. Cuneo picked up her first free position goal with 1:24 left in the half to cut the Seahawk lead to 5-2 at intermission.
Melissa Brashear turned away nine shots, including seven in the first half, in the Cardinal victory. Cuneo led the defense with four caused turnovers, while Caitlin O'Neill had six ground balls.
Carrier finished with a game-high three points on two goals and an assist, while sophomore attacker Emily Norris (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) had the other St. Mary's goal.
Senior goalie Melissa Puzak (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) made eight saves with six coming in the first half. Freshman defender Karisa Carroll (Long Island, NY/Ward Melville) anchored the defensive unit with five caused turnovers and five ground balls.
St. Mary's out-hustled the Cardinals in ground balls (23-17), while Catholic held the edge on shots (25-20) and draw controls (7-6).
The Seahawks look to snap their two-game losing streak on Saturday when they travel to Norfolk, VA for a non-conference contest at Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday, March 10 at 2:00.
