Massachusetts Falls to No. 7 Dartmouth, 11-5
AMHERST, Mass. - Behind three goals from Kristen Barry, No. 7 Dartmouth used a balanced scoring attack to outlast UMass 11-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Garber Field in the Minutewomen's home opener. The Big Green used a pair of 4-0 runs to start the first half and second half. UMass was led by junior Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) who scored two goals in the loss.
Sophomore Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.), senior Samantha Sepulveda (Freeport, N.Y.), and junior Melynda Zwick (Holland, pa.) each tallied goals for UMass which falls to 3-2 on the season. Three players scored a pair of goals each as Dartmouth, the 2006 NCAA Finalist, improves to 3-0 on the young season. The Minutewomen return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Albany in McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
The game was a defensively struggle for much of the first half. Dartmouth scored first on a Margo Duke goal 7 minutes and 32 seconds into the game. The UMass defense kept the Big Green off the scoreboard for the next 15 minutes, but the attack was unable to answer on the other end. Duke scored again followed by Barry's first goal of the game and one of two Sarah Szefi goals. Zwick finally scored for UMass with 2:02 until halftime to cut the lead to 4-1 before Katherine Chiusano scored a free position goal with 12 seconds remaining.
The Minutewomen held Dartmouth's top scorer, Whitney Douthett, to just one goal in the game which she scored to open up a 4-0 run to start the second half. Jen Pittman scored twice after that and Barry capped the run with her second strike of the day. With 16:43 remaining in regulation, Drown scored off a free position attempt to cut the lead to 9-2. Typadis followed that with her first goal of the day also on a free position attempt as UMass built momentum late in the second half.
A Sepulveda goal followed by another Typadis score made the Dartmouth lead 10-5 with just over four minutes to play, but the Big Green were able to regain possession and run out much of the final moments. Barry scored her final goal with 1:18 to go in the game to give the final margin. With her two goals today, Typadis keeps her scoring streak alive at 29 consecutive games. She now has 92 goals in 40 career games and needs five more to move into ninth all-time at UMass. Junior defender Julie Papaleo (Manlius, N.Y.) caused two turnovers today which gives her 29 for her career and moves her into 10th all-time.
Statistically, the game was close as Dartmouth held a 17-16 edge in shots and 16-11 edge in groundballs. The Big Green committed more turnovers than UMass, 20-13, but held the edge in the draw control circle 11-7. Both teams scored three free position goals, but UMass had seven attempts to just three for Dartmouth. Senior Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) took the loss in net for UMass making three saves on the day, while Dartmouth netminder Julie Wadland made four to pick up the win.
UMass will face Albany this Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The game will be held in McGuirk Alumni Stadium and admission is free to all. Live stats as well as free streaming video will be available for the game. UMass is off to its best start since the 2003 season at 3-2.
