Nagle Nets Winner as Ursinus Tops Whittier 11-10 in 3OT
SAN DIEGO, Ca. – Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) scored the game-winning goal in the third overtime to lead Ursinus past Whittier 11-10 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday night.
Nagle completed his hat trick for the evening with the game winner to help the Bears (3-0) avenge an overtime loss to the Poets last year over spring break.
Mike Stein (Springfield, PA/Springfield) added two goals and two assists, while Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) scored twice. Dave Gerbarg led Whittier with three goals and two assists.
Ursinus took a 3-1 lead, before the Poets scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-3 edge. Whittier held a 6-4 lead at halftime, but the Bears netted three straight goals to go up, 7-6.
It was knotted at 7-all after the third quarter, and both teams went back and forth until Ursinus took a 10-8 lead. The Poets tied it at 10-all, before Nagle's heroics ended the game in the third overtime for the Bears' victory.
Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) started in goal and made seven saves, making way for Matt Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) in the second half. Orlando tallied nine saves in regulation and two in overtime.
The Bears return to action on Friday against Lynchburg in San Diego, CA. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
