Delaware Tops UMBC 16-5 for First Win of Season
Baltimore, Md.—Visiting Delaware scored nine of the game's first ten goals and defeated UMBC, 16-5 at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers fall to 3-3 on the season, while Delaware gets its first win after two losses.
UMBC possessed the ball in the early stages of the game, but could not generate quality scoring opportunities. The Blue Hens jumped ahead, 2-0 on goals by Courtney Aburn and Debbie Sloan, but UMBC senior reserve attacker Heather Licht scored ten seconds after Sloan's tally to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 8:35 mark of the first half.
Delaware's Nicole Flego scored back-to-back goals, the latter on a free position shot to give the visitors a 4-1 lead at the 15:15 mark. They would tack on five more scores before UMBC senior attacker Jen Kasper ended the 7-0 run with an unassisted score with 3:10 left in the first half.
Leading 9-2 at intermission, Delaware added a score by Sloan 5:26 into the second half, but the Retrievers showed some life, getting back-to-back tallies from sophomore attacker Abbey Swift and freshman attacker Amanda Gable to trim the margin to 10-4 with 17:16 remaining. After an exchange of goals, the Blue Hens posted the final five scores to avenge last year's 12-9 loss to the Retrievers in Newark, Del.
Swift was the lone multiple-point scorer for UMBC with two goals. Sloan and Casey McCrudden each scored four points (3g, 1a) to lead Delaware.
Delaware outshot UMBC, 31-14 and Blue Hen netminder Jessica Cerveny made five saves in going the distance. UMBC starter Susie Sweeney made five saves, while allowing nine goals in 23 minutes, while reserve Kate Quick had four stops and allowed seven scores in the final 37 minutes.
UMBC returns to action on Sunday when they host Old Dominion at 1:00 p.m.
