Ewing Propels No. 2 Bullets to Win at No. 17 Rowan
GLASSBORO, N.J. – Senior attacker Alexandra Ewing (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) tallied a career-high five goals and added an assist for a personal-best six points to guide No. 2 Gettysburg to a 16-6 victory against No. 17 Rowan in non-conference action at John Page Field on Friday afternoon. A four-goal run late in the first half put the Bullets up for good, and the visitors scored the final seven markers of the game to put it out of reach.
Ewing, who had never scored more than three goals or four points prior to Friday, was one of four Gettysburg (2-0) players with at least three points on the afternoon. Senior attacker Jen Betts (Potomac, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) scored twice and added two assists, while junior attacker Jamie Giffuni (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) a goal and a career-high three assists to match her personal-best with four points. Senior captain Katie Hagan (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) chipped in with two goals and an assist.
For the Profs (1-2), senior attacker Katie Kline led the way with three goals. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Angstadt added a pair of tallies, and senior netminder Katherine Rowland had 11 saves in a 34-shot barrage by Gettysburg. The Bullets held a 34-16 shots advantage in a game they statistically dominated. Gettysburg also held advantages of 29-16 in ground balls, 30-13 in draw controls and 23-33 in turnovers.
Rowan got on the board just 33 seconds into the game on a Kline strike with junior attacker Caitlin Meseroll assisting. Just 1:23 later, Bullet junior midfielder Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School) evened it up. Ewing would put Gettysburg on top with just over 20 minutes showing on the clock before Angstadt tied it up with 17:56 to go.
The Bullets would respond by scoring six of the next seven goals over a 19:44 span. Hagan started the run with an unassisted goal. Free-position goals by Betts and junior midfielder Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) and an unassisted marker from Ewing made it 6-2. Angstadt's free-position goal with 1:09 to go before halftime cut Rowan's deficit to 6-3.
Coming out after the break, the Bullets scored three of the first four goals. Back-to-back strikes from Kline and freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Molzon just 32 seconds apart then drew the Profs back within three goals at 9-6. That would be as close as they would get, however. Ewing struck for her fourth goal less than a minute later, sparking the 7-0 Gettysburg run to end the game.
Freshman goalie Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made six stops in the cage to pick up her second victory.
The Bullets will return to action on Tuesday when they begin their spring break trip with a non-conference tilt against No. 4 Bowdoin in Wellington, Fla. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
