#10 Georgetown Outlasts #12 Syracuse in SV OT
Washington, D.C. – The No. 10 Georgetown University women’s lacrosse gave up an 8-6 lead with eight minutes to go but came back and edged the visiting and twelveth-ranked Syracuse Orange, 9-8 in sudden victory overtime today at the Multi-Sport Field. Georgetown improves to 2-1 and extends its regular-season BIG EAST winning streak to 35 games.
Senior Brittany Bashuck (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) tallied the game-winner with 1:53 to go in sudden victory OT after taking a pass from Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Baschuk finished with two goals and an assist while Stanwick recorded four goals and two assists. Senior goaltender Magie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) made a career-high 14 saves.
“It’s certainly nice to get off to a good start in BIG EAST play and we’re fortunate to come away with a win against a real good and athletic Syracuse team,” said Ricky Fried. Defensively, we played much better today. We got outshot but we gave up shots that we wanted to give up. Maggie (Koch) played really well and saw the ball well. I was happy we executed against a really tough team.”
The teams were within one goal of each other all afternoon except for a toal of seven minutes. Georgetown erased a 3-2 SU lead the Orange (2-3, 0-1 BE) built in the first ten minutes and rallied to take a 5-4 lead at intermission. The Hoyas extended their lead to 8-6 with 13:15 to go on a Stanwick unassisted marker before Halley Quillinan tallied two unassisted goals for the game’s next two goals to knot the score at 8-8.
Georgetown won the opening draw of the sudden victory overtime session but GU turned it over near the edge of the Orange eight-meter line. Syracuse tried to make a pass back to goalkeeper Amber Pardee-Hill but an errant pass* *rolled past the endline, giving the Hoyas the ball back without Pardee-Hill in the cage area as she was forced to stand near the end line where the ball left the field of play. Stanwick, who was nearest to Pardee-Hill at the time the ball rolled out of bounds was awarded the ball and found Baschuk on the doorstep at the final restart.
Hoya junior Patty Piotrowicz (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) collected two ground balls and senior Chloe Asselin (Tailloires, France/Edgemont) allowed just one goal and one assit from her defensive position. Baschuk and Stanwick connected together for a total of three goals.
Quillinan paced the SU offense with four points on three goals and one assist. Christina Dove scored two goals for Syracuse, to go along with on goal from Ashley Pike, Jill DePetris and sophomore Katie Rowan.
Georgetown improves to 14-1 in home games under third-year head coach Ricky Fried and ups its record to 5-1 in its last six overtime games dating back to last season.
Bunny O’Reilly recorded a goal, a ground ball and a caused turnover for the Hoyas. The Orange held a 14-7 advantage on the draw and outshot the Hoyas 35-23 for the game.
Georgetown hosts No. 11 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m. at the Muti-Sport Field.
