LEXINGTON, Va. * Franklin and Marshall's sophomore midfielder Ashley Bevington (Schwenksville, Pa./The Hill School) notched three goals as the eighth-ranked Diplomats defeated 10th-ranked Washington and Lee, 11-9, in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
Franklin & Marshall (3-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 1:07 of the contest, but the Generals (4-1) responded with five unanswered goals to own a 5-2 advantage with 10:34 to play in the first half. F&M used a two-straight goals, including one from Bevington, to cut the lead to 5-4 just 3:11 later, and trailed by one goal (6-5) at the half.
Washington and Lee struck first in the second half as senior midfielder Mallory Lobisser's (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Lakeside) score gave the Generals a two-goal lead (7-5) with 25:08 to play in the contest, but the Diplomats reeled off four-straight goals to assume a 9-7 lead with 12:46 left in the game. A score by sophomore midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) at 10:44 tightened the F&M edge to 9-8, but two Diplomat goals ensued and they held on down the stretch en route to the 11-9 final.
The Generals were led by Evans, who scored three goals, and sophomore attacker Kelsi Robinson's (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) one goal and two assists. Senior midfielder Kelly Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and junior midfielder Megan Slosson (Cockeyville, Md./Maryvale Prep) each added one goal and one assist. Junior Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) saw all 60 minutes in the goal for W&L, registering a season-high 13 saves.
Bevington paced F&M, while sophomore attacker Jen Pritchard (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and senior midfielder Kelly Cassels (Downingtown, Pa./Great Valley) each tallied two goals and two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Lidia Sanza (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's School) played the entire contest, making seven saves.
The Generals return to the field on Wednesday when they host ODAC-foe Bridgewater at 4:00 pm.
