No. 5 C.W. Post Defeats Southern New Hampshire, 11-6
MANCHESTER, N.H. (Mar. 10, 2007) - Junior Matt Dimler tallied three goals and one assist, while freshman Matt Merritt added a hat trick Saturday afternoon, as the fifth-ranked C.W. Post men's lacrosse team used a string of eight unanswered goals to break a 3-3 tie en route to an 11-6 victory at Southern New Hampshire.
The host Penmen (1-1) scored the first two goals of the game in the opening eight minutes, before Dimler and Tom Maloney netted tallies with 2:38 and 1:24 left, respectively, to tie the game at 2-2 after one period of play. Anthony Merendino scored 1:26 into the second period to put the visiting Pioneers (5-0) up 3-2, before SNHU's Jon Habel tallied his second goal of the game to tie the score with 10:55 left in the first half.
From there, C.W. Post scored the next eight goals of the game, including four before intermission, to take command for good. Merritt and Charles Senn alternated a pair of goals each before halftime, giving the Pioneers a 7-3 lead at intermission.
Dimler scored six minutes into the third period, before Merritt converted a Raymond Ryan (2 a) feed with 5:27 left in the frame to push the lead to 9-3. Sophomore Greg Cerar (1 g, 1 a) fired home his team-leading 12th goal of the year of a pass from Dimler with 2:46 left in the third, before Dimler scored C.W. Post's lone man-up goal of the day with 10:03 left in the fourth period to up their lead to 11-3. Southern New Hampshire scored three times in the final 8:30 of the contest to pull closer, including a pair of gaols by Spencer Rennick.
C.W. Post owned a 39-26 advantage in shots on the day, including 15-2 edge in the second period, while sophomore Mike Cama won 13 of his 19 face-offs on the day. Rob Renetta dished out a season-best two assists in the winning effort, while senior Nick Dello-Iacono made six of his 12 saves in the fourth period for the Pioneers. Southern New Hampshire goalkeeper Greg Palladino turned aside 14 shots on goal from C.W. Post.
Head coach John Jez and the Pioneers are back in action this Wednesday (Mar. 14), when they play host to Assumption at Hickox Field. Face-off from Hickox Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
