No. 14 Hampden-Sydney Coasts by Marymount, 16-3

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 10, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney's lacrosse team remained ubeaten as they scored jumped out to an early 6-0 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 16-3 victory over Marymount University on Saturday at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field. Senior William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's) and junior Kelly Mattie (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfied worked with each other to record seven assisted goals on the day, with Mattie finding Shell six times, and Shell finding Mattie once. With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-0, while the Saints fall to 1-4 on the season.

Shell scored six goals and recorded one assist, while Mattie added three goals and six assists in Hampden-Sydney's victory over Marymount University. Michael Via (Virginia Beach, VA/ Norfolk Academy) and Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) added two goals apeice.

Hampden-Sydney jumped out to an early 6-0 first quarter lead over the Saints as the Tigers scored on two of their three man-up opportunities while Marymount failed on eight of their 12 clears. In the second quarter, Hampden-Sydney went up 7-0 before the Saints scored two goals to cut the Tiger advantage to five, 7-2. The Tigers would add two more goals for a 9-2 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Hampden-Sydney increased its lead as the Tigers scored six goals in the third frame, while Marymount was unable to find the back of the net. With the Tigers leading 15-2, the fourth quarter was evenly matched as both teams were only able to notch one goal in the final frame. The Tiger goal came from freshman Andrew O'Shea (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) and was the first of his Hampden-Sydney career.

While the Tiger offense was impressive, the Hampden-Sydney defense set the tone as the Tigers seemed to grab every ground ball in the early portion of the game. Setting the tone for the Tiger defense were juniors Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling), Ian York (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield, and Alex Pritzlaff (Castle Rock, CO/ Kent Denver). Pritzlaff held the Saints' point leader to just one goal on the day, while Dunn grabbed nine ground balls.

The Tigers won 18-of-19 face-offs as freshman Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) won all ten of his face-offs, while Middleton Smith (Stevenson, MD/ Boys' Latin) won 4-of-4 face-offs and grabbed three groundballs. Senior Scott Russell (Darien, CT/Darien) recorded the victory for the Tigers in goal as he made 6 saves on 9 shots on goal, while Phil Hage (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) and Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/ Marshfield) recorded two saves in front of the net.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Wednesday, March 14, as the Tigers will travel to Grantham, PA to face Messiah College. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 pm.
