CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Tenth-ranked host Washington College went on a 6-1 run during the second half and held off visiting Washington and Lee down the stretch en route to a 10-8 men's lacrosse victory tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Generals fell to 1-3 with the loss.

W&L jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but the Shoremen tied things up before the end of the first quarter. Neither team scored in the second quarter. Washington pulled ahead, 4-3, on a goal by sophomore attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) off an assist from junior midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) with 13:46 remaining in the third quarter. Will Keigler then found Harry St. John for an extra-man goal with 9:06 to play and Lee McLaughlin scored at 7:53 as the Generals took a 5-4 lead.

The Shoremen then began their decisive run. Senior midfielder Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME) scored an unassisted goal at 7:05, junior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored off a feed from junior attackman Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) with 6:00 left in the period, and senior defenseman Jon Kenney (Amherst, NY/Amherst) fired in an unassisted marker at 2:51 as the Shoremen surged ahead, 7-5. The Generals cut the lead back to one when Keigler scored off a feed from Ned Rider with seven seconds left in the third quarter.

Generazio opened the fourth-quarter scoring off an assist from Sutter at 13:46 to make it 8-6. Senior attackman Chris Mancini (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) with 6:50 to play and Generazio gave the Shoremen their biggest lead of the game at 10-6 when he scored off an assist from junior midfielder Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) with 5:08 remaining. W&L tried to mount a comeback as Rider scored a man-down goal with 4:25 left and found Jim Ryan for a goal at 2:46 to cut it to 10-8, but could get no closer as Washington came away with the victory.

Generazio and Read led the Shoremen with two goals and one assist each, while Sutter tallied three assists and Ostrusky scored two goals. McLaughlin was the only General to score two goals, while Rider wound up with a goal and two assists for W&L.

Sophomore goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 14 saves for the Shoremen, while Chris Lalli had 17 stops for Washington and Lee. The Shoremen held a 41-37 advantage in shots and a 37-28 edge in ground balls in the game.

Tonight's game marked the eighth time in the last nine meetings between the two schools where the game was decided by two goals or less. The Shoremen return to action Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Greensboro.

The Generals (1-3) led 5-4 with 7:53 remaining in the third quarter on the second of two goals by senior midfielder Lee McLaughlin (Rockbridge Baths, Va./Episcopal). The Shoremen responded with their first three-goal run to take a 7-5 lead with 2:51 left in the period. W&L freshman attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) stopped the surge when he found the net off an assist from junior attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) with seven seconds left in the third quarter, but the Shoremen scored the next three goals, including a pair by Andrew Generazio, for a 10-6 lead with 5:08 remaining in the contest.
