Tigers Drop Home Opener to No. 11 Roanoke
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jon Mason scored five goals and added two assists to lead the 11th-ranked Roanoke College men's lacrosse team to a 19-8 victory over Colorado College in Game 2 of the 5th Annual Colorado College Invitational on Saturday afternoon at CC's Washburn Field.
The Maroons will face Mt. Ida College, a 15-14 winner over Moravian College in Game 1, in Sunday's championship game. Colorado College will face Moravian College in the third-place game at noon.
Mason scored four times in the first period as Roanoke jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Zach Thomas recorded all of his game-high five assists in the opening 15 minutes when the Maroons allowed only a goal by Toby Cohen.
The Tigers clawed their way back into the game during the second period on the efforts of Charley Perkins and Ted Nash. Perkins scored a pair of goals early in the frame, while Nash tallied three in the final 3:09, including one with less than a second remaining in the half.
The Maroons took complete control of the game with four unanswered goals in the third period and outscored CC 4-2 in the fourth.
Scott Pattison had four goals for Roanoke and Thomas finished with a game-high eight points by adding three markers of his own.
Nash had four points to lead Colorado College, while Perkins finished with three goals.
Chris Shopneck made 15 saves for the Tigers, who were out-shot 54-30. Nick peck had none saves for RC.
Leo Shidler had five goals as Mt. Ida College held off Moravian College in the tournament opener. The Mavericks used a 7-2 run to take a 14-10 lead with 7:03 remaining, but the Greyhounds scored four of the next five goals to pull to within one with 15 seconds remaining.
Moravian won the final faceoff, but was unable to get a shot off before turning the ball over with five seconds remaining.

The Maroons, ranked 13th in the latest Division III national poll, improve to 4-1 on the season. The Tigers fall to 0-1. The Maroons will play Mt. Ida (MA) College at 4:30 EST on Sunday for the Colorado College Invitational championship. Mt. Ida defeated Moravian (PA) College 15-14 on Saturday.
The Maroons jumped out quickly in Saturday's game, scoring eight goals in the first period of play. Jon Mason got the Maroons going, with the first of his five goals, that with 11:50 left in the first. Roanoke junior Billy Cameron won the ensuing face-off, pushed a fastbreak, fed the ball to Zach Thomas, who scored just seven seconds after the Mason tally. Mason scored again, with just under nine minutes to play, and the Maroons led 3-0.
After Colorado College's Toby Cohen cut the Maroons lead to 3-1 with 5:56 left, the Maroons scored four goals in the span of 1:09. Mason finished a Thomas pass to get the run going, that with 4:50 left. After senior defender Wes McFarlane scored his third goal of the season 39 seconds later, Scott Pattison gave the Maroons a 6-1 lead with 3:51 to play. Ten seconds later and Pattison was on the board again, the second of his four goals, capping the four goal run.
The Tigers battled back in to cut the Maroon lead to 9-4 with 3:09 left in the first half, but goals from Thomas and freshman Pat March and the Maroon cushion was back to seven goals, 11-4 with just 54 seconds left in the second quarter. The Tigers, however, scored two goals in the final 17 seconds, the second with just one second left. Ted Nash got both the goals, two of his three in the game.
