Ohio State Rally Falls Short to No. 11 Johns Hopkins
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-1, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women's lacrosse team lost in the final seconds, 15-14, to 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins (4-1, 1-0) at the North Turf Field Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes overcame a four-goal (12-8) Blue Jay lead in the second half to tie the game at 14 with 49 seconds left but Johns Hopkins scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left on an eight meter shot by Kirby Houck to secure the win.
Ohio State's Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) scored a game-high seven points with three goals and four assists with Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) adding four goals. Sam Schrum and Mary Key scored a team-high five points each in the game with Schrum recording four goals and an assist and Key, two goals and three assists.
Ohio State opened the scoring with a Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) goal at 20:24. Johns Hopkins scored the next four goals for a 4-1 lead. Schrum tied the game at one at 16:38 with a Key assist. The Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead with a Steph Janice goal at 16:26. Kirby Houck, assisted by Sarah Walsh, at 16:06 and a Walsh goal at 15:30, assisted by Lauren Schwarzmann, made it 4-1. Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) scored to cut the lead to two (4-2) at 13:26. Schrum scored on an eight meter attempt at 12:03 and Walsh at 10:39 to make it 6-3. Slahor, assisted by Yourick at 9:27 made it 6-3.
Schrum, with an eight meter goal at 8:31 made it 7-3. OSU's Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) scored at 8:03 on an eight meter attempt to cut the lead to three. The Buckeyes made it a two-goal (7-5) game at 7:00 with a Haggerty goal, assisted by Slahor. A Janice goal at 3:59 made it, 8-5, but OSU's Megan Levins (Fr., Hatfield, Pa.) responded with an eight meter goal at 2:39 to make it 8-6. The Blue Jays, with a Key goal at 1:22, assisted by Alex Nolan, and a Janice goal at 0:47, assisted by Schrum, made it 10-6. The Buckeyes closed out the half with a Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.) goal at 38 seconds to trail by three, 10-7 at half.
The Buckeyes opened the second half with Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) in goal. Haggerty opened the scoring at 27:44, assisted by Slahor to make it 10-8. The Blue Jays responded with a Key goal at 24:13, assisted by Houck, and a Walsh goal at 23:50 to take a four-goal lead at 12-8. A Slahor goal at 16:51 cut the lead to 12-9 and Haggerty, with an eight meter goal at 13:37 made it, 12-10. Johns Hopkins made it 13-10 with a Janice goal at 13:20, assisted by Key. Slahor's eight meter goal at 10:53 cut the lead to two at 13-11. The Blue Jays responded with a Schrum goal, assisted by Key, at 7:56 to put the lead at three, 14-11.
Johns Hopkins controlled the draw and had five shots with DeMarco making four saves before OSU controlled the ball leading to a Haggerty goal at 4:06, assisted by Slahor, to trail, 14-12. The Blue Jays controlled the draw but a turnover gave the Buckeyes the ball leading to a Yourick goal at 1:33, assisted by Slahor cutting the lead to one at 14-13. Johns Hopkins again controlled the draw but a turnover caused by Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) allowed her to score with 49 seconds left to tie the game at 14. The Blue Jays controlled the draw with both teams having turnovers in the action but Johns Hopkins scored with 12 seconds left on an eight meter goal by Houck to take a 15-14 lead. Ohio State controlled the draw and was awarded an eight meter attempt with .9 seconds left. Shimp's shot was saved by Blue Jays goalie Amelia Harris to end the game, giving Johns Hopkins a 15-14 win.
