McGrath Leads #18 Hofstra Past #17 Cornell, 13-8
Hempstead, NY -- Senior midfielder Casey McGrath had six goals and added one assist to lead the #18 Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a 13-8 victory #17 Cornell at James M. Shuart Stadium on Sunday afternoon. McGrath had three goals in each half and she led the way helping the Pride score nine of the final 12 goals in the contest to earn its second win of the season.
Hofstra saw its short two-game losing skid come to an end as the Pride evened its record at 2-2 this season. Cornell dropped its second straight and fell to 1-3 in 2007.
Trailing 5-4 after Cornell's Courtney Farrell gave the Big Red its first lead of the game at the 6:27 mark of the first half, Hofstra scored three unanswered goals to end the half to lead 7-5 at the break. Hofstra held an early 2-0 lead after goals from senior midfielder Becky Thorn and Casey McGrath and regained its two-goal advantage when sophomore midfielder Lauren Whitcomb and Casey McGrath started the three-goal spurt to end the half. Freshman attacker Ashley Jones finished the run with her first tally of the contest in the final minute off an assist from Casey McGrath.
After the Big Red scored two of the first three goals in the second half to get within 8-7 following an unassisted goal from Jessica Wiegand, Hofstra took complete control of the contest as they notched five straight goals to take a commanding 13-7 lead with 12:21 left in the second stanza. Casey McGrath got the run started with a pair of goals before sophomore attacker Alicia Recco, senior attacker Kimberly Hillier and freshman midfielder K'Leigh Vanaman completed the game-deciding run.
Casey McGrath was the only player on the Pride with more than one goal in the contest as seven other players found the back of the net for the Pride. McGrath, who scored her six goals on just seven shots, was 4-5 on free-position shots in the game.
Hofstra, led by junior attacker Kelly McGrath (no relation) and Hillier, held a commanding 15-8 advantage in draw controls in the contest. Kelly McGrath had a game-high four draw controls and Hillier added three, while scoring a goal to extend her point scoring streak to 39 games.
Junior defender Kerrin Fraser and Whitcomb each tallied a team-high two ground balls on the afternoon, while Whitcomb and freshman midfielder Corrine Gandolfi each had two caused turnovers.
Wiegand led the way for Cornell with three goals and Farrell added a pair of tallies. Cornell goalie Renee Hughes made eight saves in net and added a game-high three ground balls for the Big Red.
Junior goalie Maisie Osteen played all 60 minutes in net for the Pride and made eight saves to earn her second victory of the season. Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, March 18 when they travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on #20 Vanderbilt at 12:00 p.m.

With Ivy League play looming next weekend, the Big Red fell to 1-3 on the year, while the Pride evened its record at 2-2.
Wiegand's three-goal effort was supported by two goals from junior Courtney Farrell, but no other Big Red player had more than one point in the loss. The goalkeeping tandem of Renee Hughes and Mary Montague did their best to keep the visitors in the game, combining for 10 saves, five ground balls and two caused turnovers, but were peppered with 31 shots.
