Bloomsburg in Season Opener to Gannon, 15-4

BLOOMSBURG — The Bloomsburg University lacrosse team opened its 2007 season with a 15-4 loss at Sports Stadium to Gannon University.

The Huskies, under first year coach Leah Quigley, got two goals each from Meg Taylor (West Chester/West Chester) and Cali Toms (Pottstown/Pottsgrove), but it was not enough to overcome five goals by the Lady Knights Melissa Hill.

Bloomsburg, 0-1, will be off till March 21st when it travels to Slippery Rock.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Gannon women’s lacrosse team scored the first five goals and rolled past Bloomsburg (Pa.) 15-4 Monday afternoon, winning its school-record fifth consecutive match to begin the season.

Gannon has reached double digits in goals every match this season, posting a 13.8 scoring margin in the first five contests.

The Lady Knights wasted little time generating offensive firepower again on Monday. The squad tallied the first five goals and held Bloomsburg scoreless until 12:31 had expired from the clock. Melissa Hill (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) scored the first three goals.

Following Bloomsburg’s only goal of the first half, Gannon tacked on three more goals and went to halftime with an 8-1 advantage. The Lady Knights then scored the first two goals of the second half to assume a 10-1 lead. During the 5-0 run that stretched over two periods, the Gannon defense held Bloomsburg scoreless for 24 minutes and 32 seconds.

Bloomsburg rallied with two goals to cut the deficit to 10-3, but Gannon tallied five of the contest’s final six scores for a 15-4 victory.

Hill led all scorers with a season-high five goals. Krista Schunk (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima), Joanna Culkin (Clifton Park, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), and Abbey Lighton (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) added three goals each. Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) completed the scoring with one goal.

Lighton and Culkin dished out three assists each. Acacia Cook (Clay, N.Y./Clay-NS) turned away 11 shots in goal.

Gannon, ranked eighth in NCAA Division II, is off to the best start in school history with a 5-0 record. Bloomsburg dropped to 0-1. The Lady Knights return to action Wednesday, March 14 against Division I Canisius at Gannon University Field. The home opener is scheduled for 2 p.m.
