Nazareth Edges St. Andrews in Opener, 11-9
LAURINBURG, N.C. (March 11, 2007) -- Senior Tia Morgia scored five goals Sunday, including the go-ahead goal in the second half, as Nazareth won its season-opening game in women's lacrosse with an 11-9 over Division II St. Andrews College.
"It was a scary game, a typical first game," said Nazareth Coach Sue Behme. "We didn't play particularly well, but our seniors stepped up and we found a way."
Colleen Earley had a career-best three goals, Beth Quartier scored twice and Jessica McArdle also had a goal.
The game was tied 5-5 at halftime, then St. Andrews twice had two-goal leads in the second half before Nazareth rallied. The Golden Flyers scored the last three goals of the game to erase the deficit. Morgia had two of the goals and Earley scored the final goal.
Sophomore Maria Fusco played all 60 minutes in goal and made six saves. Nazareth, ranked 16th nationally in Division III, plays again Friday at St. Lawrence at 4:00 p.m.
