Cortland State Powers to 15-3 Victory Over Bentley
WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. – Seniors Ali Bourgal (Sachem) and Jennifer Willis (Huntington) each scored six points to lead the nationally sixth-ranked Cortland women’s lacrosse team to a 15-3 victory versus Bentley College in the season-opener for the Red Dragons.
Bourgal finished with five goals and an assist, and Willis recorded four goals and two assists. Senior Andrea Venditti (Baldwinsville/ C.W. Baker) contributed three goals and two assists, freshman Jessie Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) added two goals and an assist and senior Jill Battaglia (Amherst) scored a goal for Cortland (1-0). Freshman Deanne Abell (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) started in goal and made six saves in 45 minutes before giving way to sophomore Sam Anderson (Irondequoit/Eastridge), who stopped two shots in 15 minutes.
For Bentley (3-0), sophomore Alyssa Ritchie recorded a goal and an assist, while junior Liz Goddard and freshman Jaclyn Griffin each scored a goal. Freshman goalie Christina Guglielmo made seven saves.
The Red Dragons opened up a 7-0 lead in the game’s opening 20 minutes as Willis scored three times and Bourgal notched two goals. Ritchie finally put Bentley on the scoreboard with four minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the opening half with a free position goal before Venditti closed the stanza with her second and third goals of the game.
Cortland increased its lead to 15-1 with the first six goals of the second half before Bentley tallied the game’s last two goals late for the final score.
Cortland will face Skidmore on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in West Palm Beach.

WELLINGTON, Fla. -- Nine first-half goals from the Red Dragons were enough to power Cortland State to a 15-3 win over the Bentley women's lacrosse team on Monday night in non-conference action at Village Park. The loss drops the Falcons to 0-3, while the Red Dragons opened their season with the win.
Freshman Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) continued the hot start to her collegiate career with a goal, her fourth of the season in just her third collegiate game. Sophomore Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover, Mass./North Andover HS) and junior Liz Goddard (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough HS) also scored for the Falcons with Ritchie netting her goal on a free position shot. Goddard and Ritchie remain tied for the team lead with six goals this season.
Freshman Christina Guglielmo (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven HS) made seven saves in goal for Bentley.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday, March 21, for their home opener at 7:00 p.m. against Merrimack in Northeast-10 action.
