Stevens Falls Short in 12-8 Loss to Geneseo

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 13, 2007) – Sophomore midfielder Maggie Morris (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the SUNY Geneseo women's lacrosse team with four goals and two assists as they defeated the Stevens Institute of Technology, 12-8, on Tuesday afternoon in Orlando, Fla. With the loss, the Ducks dropped to 2-2 overall, while the Knights opened the 2007 season at 1-0 with the win.

Trailing 9-4 with just under 11 minutes remaining, Stevens began to make a comeback as junior attack Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) connected on a pass from junior attack/midfielder Kaitlyn Roes (Stillwater, N.J.). Less than a minute later sophomore attack Dana Perriello (Pittsburgh, Pa.) netted her first goal of the game off a pass from Mather to cut the Knights' lead to 9-6 with 9:37 to play. Perriello recorded her second goal of the game two minutes later to bring the Ducks within two with 7:35 remaining in the game.

Geneseo netted the next three goals to regain a five-goal advantage. Senior midfielder Maggie Benham (Canandaigua, N.Y.), senior attack Emily Ward (East Hampton, N.Y.) and Morris netted the Knights goals within a 5:39 span.

Freshman midfielder Alyssa Pigott (Jobstown, N.J.) netted her second tally of the contest with seven seconds remaining in regulation.

Pigott, freshman attack Katie Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and Perriello each totaled two goals apiece for Stevens. Mather led the Ducks with three assists in the game, while Pigott had two. Roes picked up four draw controls and four groundballs for Stevens.

For Geneseo, Benham and senior midfielder Emily Hilts (Niskayuna, N.Y.) each had three goals apiece. Morris and Ward tallied two assists each in the game. Benham led the team with seven draw controls.

For the game, Geneseo out-shot Stevens 31-16 and held a 27-17 advantage in ground balls. The Ducks converted on 19 of 27 clearing attempts while the Knights were 15-for-18. Geneseo also held a 14-8 advantage in draw controls in the game.

Stevens is back in action on Wednesday, March 14, when it plays University of New England to wrap up its Spring Break trip in Orlando, Fla. The game is slated for 6:00 p.m.
