BERKELEY – California freshman midfielder Alyse Kennedy scored a career-high five goals and a career-high seven points in her first start in the Golden Bears' 16-7 victory over Colgate on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Kennedy added two assists for a game-high seven points, while junior teammate Danni Zuralow scored five points (2 goals, 3 assists). Cal senior goalkeeper Hilary Lynch made 13 saves in 47 minutes and 22 seconds of work.

Kennedy's seven points put her in a fourth-place tie with four other players on Cal's all-time single-game scoring list. Maddie Kearns led the Red Raiders with three points (1, 2).

"I was really happy with the second half with our consistency and intensity," Cal head coach Jill Malko said. "Our drop in intensity against UConn cost us the game, and today we really stayed focused and even fired it up a notch in terms of our ability to execute throughout. That paid off for us. We played really well together, as a team. And Alyse, what a great story for her, in her first start as a freshman, with five goals, two assists and five draw controls. She's been playing really well in practice, and I thought, It's time. Let's give her a shot. Boy, did she step up. It's nice to see."

"I was really excited with the opportunity to start," Kennedy said. "That really pumped me up. And it's helped to have such a team that's so supportive."

Cal freshman Tighe Hutchins scored the first goal of each half, striking 32 seconds into the first half and just nine seconds into the second half. Kennedy recorded her first goal at the 2:46 mark to give Cal a 2-0 lead. Colgate tied the game on a free-position shot by Molly Carroll and an unassisted goal from Jessica Van der Meulen, whose goal came at 14:18.

Sophomore teammate Madeleine Dale scored off a free-position shot at 16:56, freshman Alex Tickner set up a Zuralow goal at 20:23 and Brittany Aungier assisted on Cal junior Mary Downs' goal at 22:47. Katie Holland scored for the Red Raiders at 28:01, and Cal took a 6-3 lead into halftime.

After Hutchins' goal gave Cal a 7-3 lead early in the second half, sophomore midfielder Elizabeth "T" Jahp scored at 32:31 and Meghan Lawler scored at 33:48 to make the score 8-4. Kennedy scored the next two goals before Tara Casey scored on a free-position shot for Colgate at 37:48, and Cal led, 10-5.

The Bears scored the next four goals, with Dale, senor Laura Cavallo, Zuralow and Tickner each scoring once, to give the Bears a 14-5 lead at 47:06.
