Rowan Leads #11 Syracuse to Victory over Towson
TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore attacker Katie Rowan (Bethlehem Central H.S./Delmar, N.Y.) scored a season-high five goals, including four in the first half, as 11th-ranked Syracuse University (3-3) earned its first road victory of the season with an 18-10 non-conference win over Towson University (2-2) at the Tigers' Johnny Unitas Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
After sophomore Hillary Fratzke (Queen Anne's County H.S./Centerville, Md.) gave the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead just 47 seconds into the first half, freshman Christina Dove (Bel Air H.S./Bel Air, Md.) tallied back-to-back goals in a 48-second span to give Syracuse a 2-1 advantage. However, the Tigers responded with goals from Fratzke and senior midfielder Shannon Witzel (Pottstown H.S./Pottstown, Pa.) in a 20-second span to regain a one-goal lead for Towson.
Led by Rowan, the Orange went on a 9-2 run to take a commanding 11-5 lead with 6:52 remaining in the first half. Rowan scored three goals during the spurt while senior Ashley Pike (General Brown H.S./Watertown, N.Y.) added a pair of markers during the spurt.
Fratzke ended the first half scoring with 6:36 remaining in the first half off an assist from junior attacker Kendie Bauer (Fallston H.S./Fallston, Md.). Fratzke, who scored five goals in the Tigers' home opener against American two weeks ago, had four of the Tigers' six goals in the opening period.
The Orange opened the second half with three of the first four goals as junior Kristin Brady (Binghamton H.S./Binghamton, N.Y.) recorded two of the three tallies during the spurt. The two teams traded goals three times before sophomore Bridget Hamm (Penn Yan Academy/Penn Yan, N.Y.) scored the final goal of the game, an unassisted marker with 54 seconds remaining.
Rowan was one of four Syracuse players to score multiple goals in the victory. Pike posted a career-high four goals while Dove had three goals and recorded three draw controls. Brady scored two goals with an assist while senior Jill DePetris (Archbishop Carroll H.S./Radnor, Pa.) tallied one goal with a career high-tying three assists.
Fratzke led the Tigers in the loss by matching her career high with five goals. She also had two ground balls and four draw controls. Witzel and Taylor each scored twice while adding an assist. Corry posted 11 saves in the loss. Syracuse outshot the Tigers by a 36-29 margin and had a 21-17 advantage in ground balls.
The Tigers will begin a two-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when they travel to George Washington University to face the Colonials at 4:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Orange will return home to face Notre Dame on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
