La Salle Deals Quinnipiac Heartbreaking 14-13 Loss
Tiffany Manzi posted a career-high six points and matched another with four goals, but the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team took a heartbreaking loss at La Salle on Wednesday afternoon in a game that featured nine ties and three lead changes. Katie Latonick posted two career highs as well with three assists and three points. A box score will be posted when it becomes available.
Quinnipiac drops to 2-2 overall, 0-0 in NEC play. La Salle improves to 3-2 overall, 0-0 in NEC play.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead to begin the game. Ashley Valentine took a pass from Tiffany Manzi and broke through the defense for the first goal at 27:35. Manzi put the Bobcats up 2-0 at 26:38 when Manzi scored on a free position shot.
La Salle tied the game up with goals coming from Jill Davis and Emily Bonczek at 26:01 and 24:57.
However, the Bobcats scored two more goals to regain its lead. After a La Salle foul on the right corner, Kaitlyn Vennard found Manzi for her second goal and third point of the game at 24:01. Vennard then found the back of the net through traffic at 22:16 to tie the score up again. Katy Delagi was credited with an assist.
La Salle scored three straight goals to take its first lead of the game at 5-4. Goals came from Stepfany McKee, Bonczek and Catie Borneman. Straight off the draw won by Manzi, the sophomore midfielder found Nicole Fiore who battled through the Explorers' defense and tied the score at 5-5 with 12:30 on the clock. Manzi was credited with an assist.
After La Salle regained another two-goal lead, Katie Latonick set up two Bobcat goals and set a career high for assists in a game to tie the score a fourth time at 7-7. Latonick was behind the goal and first found Manzi to complete a hat trick at 6:10. Katie Latonick then had the ball on the left corner and found Valentine at 5:47 to tie the score.
La Salle regained a lead at 8-7 with 5:17 remaining in the half courtesy of Tiffany Grossi. Quinnipiac's Meghan Latonick almost tied the score up at the buzzer. She cut straight for the goal and received a high pass, but unfortunately sent it wide. The Explorers escaped with a one-goal lead at recess.
The Latonick sisters connected for the first time ever to tie the score at 28:02 to begin the second half. Quinnipiac regained the lead at 22:14 when Erin Coffey found Delagi for her first goal of the game.
La Salle tied the game a sixth time with 21:05 remaining courtesy of McKee which would begin a flurry of the teams flopping goals seven times.
Quinnipiac regained the lead at 20:37 when Valentine found Cornelius who broke through the defense for her first goal of the season.
La Salle tied the score for the seventh time at 10-10, but Quinnipiac responded once again. Valentine found Manzi who added to her career day with her fourth goal and sixth point of the game.
The Explorers tied the score at 11's on a free position shot by Davis. It was the eighth tie of the game and forced Quinnipiac to call a timeout.
Fiore put the Bobcats ahead again at 8:22 when Delagi found her from behind the net to make it 12-11.
La Salle took another lead at 13-12 with two straight goals coming from Bonczek and Davis.
Down a goal. Quinnipiac took over a minute off the clock following a successful clear. Fiore took the ball and made her way through the entire La Salle defense to score the ninth equalizer of the game with 2:52 on the clock.
Unfortunately, Bonczek would score the eventual game-winning goal with 1:35 remaining in the game when she rifled a shot past Quinnipiac's goalie in the corner with Bobcat defenders in her face.
