No. 2 Gettysburg Wins CC Opener over Washington
WELLINGTON, Fla. – No. 2 Gettysburg scored the first nine goals of the game and jumped out to a 12-2 halftime lead en route to a 17-4 win against Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Thursday morning. Junior midfielder Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) and senior captain Katie Hagan (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) tallied five points apiece, and senior goalie Susan Meyers (Ridgewood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) picked up her first career victory.
Ceglarski netted three goals and added two assists for the Bullets (4-0, 1-0 CC). Senior attacker Jen Betts (Potomac, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) recorded a hat trick to tie for the game high in goals. Hagan's five points tied her career high on a day when she handed out a personal-best four assists.
The Shorewomen (2-4, 0-1 CC) were led by sophomore midfielder Brittany Lambert, who scored three times. Junior midfielder Jenna Gouck added a goal and an assist, and senior netminder Mollie Binotto made 14 saves in a game that saw Gettysburg hold a 44-15 overall shots advantage.
In the game, three Bullet freshmen scored their first career goals. Midfielder Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) connected for a goal and an assist, while attacker Grace Concannon (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) and midfielder Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) each had a goal. Meyers also made a career-high eight saves in her first start to earn the win.
Junior attacker Krissy Browning (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) got the scoring started just 2:46 into the game with an assist going to senior attacker Alexandra Ewing (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest). Ewing also scored twice on the day for a total of three points. Her first goal came 2:25 after Browning's. Hagan scored less than a minute after that to make it 3-0, and Ceglarski picked up assists on both Ewing's and Hagan's goals. Betts then scored twice in a span of 2:36, including her second game winner in as many games with 18:53 left before halftime.
Gettysburg added four more goals before Lambert ended the run at the 11:09 mark. The Bullets would get the next three goals, including a pair from freshman attacker Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) less than two minutes apart. Lambert registered her second score with 53 seconds to go before halftime. The Bullets tallied the first four goals of the second half to put the game away.
Gettysburg will return to action next Thursday when the Bullets travel to Swarthmore for both team's CC opener. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
