Canisius Starts Fast, Downs Robert Morris, 15-9
For the second consecutive game, the Canisius College women's lacrosse team scored the opening five goals of the game, and this time they were able to build on that early lead, defeating Robert Morris 15-9 Thursday afternoon from the Demske Sports Complex.
Lauren Walsh (Auburn, N.Y.) tied her career high with five goals and set a career high with seven points in the win. Ashley Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Brett Poissant (Syracuse, N.Y.) each had three goals in the game with Poisstant setting a career high.
After Robert Morris (2-4) ended the five-goal start by Canisius (3-4), the Griffs responded with four of the next five goals and went into the locker room with the 9-3 advantage.
Robert Morris scored the first goal of the second half to get within five goals at 9-4, which would be as close as the Colonials got in the game. The Griffs extended their lead to 15-6 on Walsh's fifth goal of the game with 14:02 remaining in the game.
Rasheeda Brenton (Clarence, N.Y.) had 11 saves in the win.
"Our team had a solid effort today and it was great to get the entire team some experience and valuable playing time throughout the game," Canisius coach Scott Teeter said. "I was glad to see the girls rebound from Wednesday's loss."
Canisius next plays March 28 when it travels to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure.
Game Notes: Walsh also had five goals March 23, 2005, against Binghamton… Poissant also set a career high with four points… The seven points by Walsh were the most since Whitney Card (Alton, Ont.) had eight April 1, 2006, against Iona… Canisius has won six of its last seven at home… The Griffs have defeated the Colonials in all three games.
