Late Goal Lifts Swarthmore Past Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior midfielder Megan Sanborn scored a free-position goal with 35 seconds remaining in the game to give Swarthmore College an 11-10 victory over Colorado College in a Division III women's lacrosse game on Thursday afternoon at CC's Stewart Field.

Sanborn's goal came after the Tigers had staged a furious comeback to tie the game at 11-10 with 1:59 to play. Senior midfielder Kerry O'Shaughnessy and junior attacker Mallory Newton each scored twice as CC wiped out a 10-6 deficit in a span of 1:22.

With the Garnet attempting to run out the clock, freshman midfielder Kristin Rider appeared to have forced a turnover in the last minute, but was called for brushing Sanborn's head with her stick after the ball had come free. Swarthmore won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock.

Senior attacker Athena Samaras had two goals and an assist to ignite a 4-0 run by the Garnet in the opening 6:17 of the second half to grab an 8-5 lead. Senior midfielder Hannah Murtaugh finally put an end to CC's scoring draught with 22:52 remaining, but Swarthmore scored the next two to take a four-goal lead with 7:57 to go.

Senior midfielder Catherine Crawford led the Garnet with three goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Abbe Muller added three goals. Newton had a game-high five points with four goals and an assist, while O'Shaugnessy had three markers and set up another.

Susannah Blair made six saves for Swarthmore (3-0). Jess Van Doren stopped eight shots for the Tigers. The Garnet had a 25-22 edge in shots. The only statistic with any disparity was fouls, where CC had a significant 38-20 disadvantage.
