Dobbie Nets 7 as #3 Maryland Tops #9 Dartmouth, 13-7
HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) scored four goals and one assist for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team, but No. 3 Maryland led from start to finish, taking a 13-7 victory on Friday afternoon. The game originally was scheduled for a 2:30 start Saturday afternoon as nightcap of a lacrosse doubleheader, but was moved up a day because of predictions of a snowstorm.
The Terrapins (6-1) scored five goals in the first 18 minutes and held a 6-3 lead at halftime. Dana Dobbie scored three of her seven in the first 30 minutes of play. In the second half, the ninth-ranked Big Green got within two goals, 7-5, when Douthett netted a free position shot with 22:07 to play. Dobbie and Douthett traded goals about three minutes apart, making it 8-6 in favor of Maryland with 13:39 remaining. The Terrapins then had another goal by Dobbie and two more 17 seconds apart, taking control, 11-6.
Maryland's high-octane offense only outshot Dartmouth, 36-31, but turnovers hurt the Big Green. Also scoring for the Big Green was sophomore Katherine Chiusano (Medford, N.J.) with a pair of goals while junior Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) had one.
"Maryland's a very strong team," said Dartmouth coach Amy Patton, "and that first 10 minutes of the game - when we had four or five turnovers in a row and they capitalized - I thought we let them set the tone for the game. Maryland took advantage of that." She added, "I thought it was great to see how we responded. If you are trying to find some silver linings in the game, I thought our defense played pretty well.
"We just need to move forward from this," said Patton, whose Big Green now on the road for three straight games, beginning Tuesday at No. 5 James Madison. The Ivy League season opens March 24 at No. 18 Yale and continues the following day at Columbia.
In the nets, Dartmouth freshman Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) made 13 saves before freshman Chelsea Kirk (Hunt Valley, Md.) came on in relief, making two saves in the final 5:17. For Maryland, Allie Buote made nine stops.

HANOVER, N.H. – Junior Dana Dobbie scored a career-high seven goals on just 10 shots to lead the No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 win against No. 9 Dartmouth on March 16 at Scully-Fahey Field. Senior Katie Doolittle added a hat trick while junior Allie Buote recorded nine saves in goal. Junior Katie Princiotto had a goal and a pair of assists in the win while freshman Caitlyn McFadden dished out two assists. Junior Kelly Kasper had a goal and an assist as well.
Much like Virginia did against the Terps on Tuesday, Maryland jumped out to a 5-0 lead and did not allow the Big Green to score until there was 8:41 left in the first half. Maryland's five goals all came from different players. Kasper notched her goal and an assist in the run while Princiotto recorded her two assists.
Dartmouth rattled off three straight goals after scoring their first to cut the lead to 5-3 with 4:26 remaining in the half. Whitney Douthett had a goal and an assist to lead the Big Green's attack. Maryland got one more on the board before the halftime break as McFadden hooked up with Dobbie with two and a half minutes left give the Terrapins a 6-3 lead at the break.
The Terps extended their lead after the half as Dobbie scored five minutes in to make it 7-3. Dobbie picked up a loose ball in the fan and fired it past the Dartmouth keeper for the score. The Big Green responded with two more goals to cut the lead to two again, 7-5, with 22 minutes on the clock, and the score went to 8-6 after Dobbie and Douthett traded goals.
