Tribe Ends Roadtrip with 21-11 Win over St. Mary's
Moraga, Calif. - William and Mary sophomore attacker Dolly Williams (Richmond, Va.) scored a career-high six goals to lead the Tribe past St. Mary's, 21-11, Saturday afternoon in Moraga.
Williams highlighted an offensive onslaught for W&M (2-4) and was one of five multi-goal scorers on the afternoon for the Tribe. Kristen Wong (Richmond, Va.) scored three goals, and Mary Zulty (Jarrettsville, Md.), Clare Dennis (Catonsville, Md.) and Julia Martin (Woodside, Calif.) each tallied a pair of goals.
Williams scored three of her goals in the opening 15 minutes, as the Tribe raced out to an 8-2 lead at the 14:35 mark of the first. Williams would add one more in the intitial period, before Jamie Fitzgerald (Jenkintown, Pa.) tacked on another with a free-position goal to give the Tribe a 10-5 cushion at the break.
Freshman Sara Beckstead (Annapolis, Md.) recorded four saves in the win, including three stops in the second half that allowed W&M to pull away with it's dominant attack.
Another reason for the Tribe's offensive success was its aggression on draw controls, as W&M held a 22-12 advantage on draws, including a 12-4 edge in the first half. Freshman Katie Rees (Catonsville, Md.) led the way with four draw controls, while Zulty, Dennis, Wong and Annie Macomber (Vienna, Va.) each snagged three draws.
Rees also grabbed a team-high four ground balls and added a goal and an assist. Wong chipped in with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Leading 11-7, Williams jump-started a six-goal run that allowed the Tribe to put it away early in the second half. Jaime Sellers (Kennebunk, Maine) got on the board, and Wong completed the hat trick with 23:03 remaining to make it 14-7. Rees found the net on a free-position shot, before Dennis and Macomber each scored to give W&M a commanding 17-7 lead.
Williams would score two more in the final 16 minutes, and freshman Katie Delaney (Fairfax, Va.) scored her first-career goal to round out the scoring for the Tribe.
The Tribe returns to action on Wednesday evening, visiting state-rival Virginia in Charlottesville.
