Catawba Takes 12-9 Victory over Mars Hill
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba tallied five of the final six goals and defeated visiting Mars Hill 12-9 in Deep South Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the DSC. The Lions fall to 3-4 and 1-1.
Mars Hill jumped to a quick 2-0 lead after three and half minutes, but Catawba stormed back to score the next five goals to lead 5-2 after a quarter. Sean Duggan (Wantagh, NY) and Mike Dolesh (Aquasco, MD) each had two goals in the burst.
Mars Hill cut the deficit to a single goal with 10:25 to go in the half as David Hodgins (Windsor, Ontario, CANADA) and Steven Henz (Shareham, NY) scored just over 30 seconds apart. That would be the only goals of the period and Catawba led 5-4 at the break.
Kurt Green (San Diego, CA) put the Tribe up 6-4 a little over minute into the second half, but Mars Hill scored the next three goals, grabbing a 7-6 edge on a tally by Christian McLean (Orchard Park, NY) with 7:29 left in the quarter. Duggan tied the game for Catawba, but Kevin Woods (New Market, Ontario, CANADA) notched his third goal of the game at the 5:50 mark of the third to give the Lions an 8-7 edge.
Duggan added his fourth goal of the night to tie the game at the 1:50 mark of the quarter and Sean Sullivan (Rockville, MD) gave Catawba a 9-8 lead with 43 seconds to go in the frame. Green scored twice for the Indians in the opening three minutes of the final quarter to push the Catawba lead to 11-8.
Green finished with three goals and three assists for Catawba. Ben Huber (Westminster, MD) stopped 16 shots in goal for the Tribe. Nick Sigona (Auburn, NY) had nine saves for the Lions.
