Strong 2nd Half Propels Stony Brook by Monmouth, 12-6

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University women's lacrose team opened the second half with five unanswered goals en route to a 12-6 victory over Monmouth on Sunday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The win moves the Seawolves to 5-1 on the season while the Hawks drop to 5-3.

The Seawolf defense was outstanding throughout the game as it held the Hawks scoreless in the second half for the first 20:57. The Hawks tandem of Carolyn Raveia and Katie Degen entered the game scoring a combined 56 goals, but were limited to three combined in the game.

After Degen opened up the scoring 3:31 into the contest, Jenna Celano answered right back 36 seconds later off a feed from Carlee Buck to knot the contest at one. Emily Jaissle put the home team up 2-1 when she found the back of the cage on a free position shot at the 20:40 mark before Raveia netted her lone goal of the game with 19:14 left in the first half. The Seawolves then rattled off four unanswered tallies, two coming from Kaitlin Leggio, to grab a 6-2 lead. Megan Nutter connected on two free position shots at the end of the first half to cut the Seawolves lead to 6-4 heading into the locker room.

Using five unanswered goals to start the second half, Stony Brook took control of the contest and never looked back. Jenna Celano tallied three of her game-high five goals in the second half as she led the offensive charge. Leggio finished with three goals and a pair of assists while Amy Hallion and Jaissle each netted a pair of goals. Jen Sandtorv recorded 15 saves in the win.
The Seawolves return to action when they travel to take on Siena on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

STONY BROOK, N.Y.- Monmouth University’s women’s lacrosse team suffered its second loss of the week and third of the season on Sunday after falling to Stony Brook, 12-6.

The Hawks, now 5-3 on the season, pulled out to a 1-0 lead with a Katie Degen (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) unassisted goal in the first three and a half minutes. Stony Brook answered with a pair of goals but Degen fed fellow senior Carolyn Raveia (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) with 19:14 left to tie the game at 2-2.

The Blue & White trailed 6-4 coming out of the break and Stony Brook’s offense made sure that the home team would retain the lead for the rest of the way by scoring four straight goals in the first 15 minutes. Degen and Colleen Burg (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored goals at the 9:03 and 5:33 marks, respectively, but MU eventually fell 12-6.
