No. 11 Syracuse Rallies to Down No. 6 Notre Dame, 16-13
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 11th-ranked Orange scored the final four goals of the game against No. 6 Notre Dame, rallying to defeat the Fighting Irish, 16-13. Senior Ashley Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) and junior Bridget Looney (Silver Springs, Md.) each had career days in leading SU's offense, combining for nine goals on the afternoon.
Pike tallied a career-best five goals and Looney also set a personal best with four goals. Freshman Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) netted three goals and sophomore Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) scored twice. Sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) and senior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) each added one goal and combined for five assists. Rowan matched a career high with three assists on the afternoon.
Sophomore Amber Pardee-Hill (Glenmont, N.Y.) stopped six Notre Dame shots in the cage and earned her first victory against a top-10 opponent. Senior Chelsea Strodel (Skaneateles, N.Y.) had a solid game on defense. She forced three turnovers in the first half and then held Notre Dame's leading scorer, Jillian Byers, without a goal in the second half.
The Orange (4-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) wasted no time jumping to an early lead. Quillinan scored just 28 seconds into the game and then Pike scored two goals shortly after. Looney netted her first goal of the afternoon as SU grabbed a 4-0 lead less than seven minutes into the contest.
Notre Dame (5-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) did not give up and responded with a 6-2 stretch to knot the game at six. Quillinan scored her third goal of the afternoon to give Syracuse a 7-6 advantage at overtime.
The second half was closely contest throughout. The Irish scored the first goal of the period to tie the game at seven and the two teams traded goals after that three times. Notre Dame gained its first lead of the afternoon at 11-10 after Caitlin McKinney scored her third goal of the afternoon with 15:56 remaining.
The teams then traded scores two more times until Syracuse ended the game on its 4-0 run. Looney knotted the game at 13 with 11:20 remaining and Rowan gave the Orange the advantage for good one minute later. Pike and Looney each added goals as the Orange sealed its first victory over a top-10 team in four tries this season.
The Fighting Irish were led by McKinney, who recorded four goals and two assists during the game. Byers and Meghan Murphy each netted three scores.
The Orange is back in action on Saturday, March 24, squaring off against BIG EAST foe Connecticut in Storrs.

(Syracuse, N.Y.) - The Notre Dame women's lacrosse team spent its third consecutive weekend in Western New York as the Irish visited Syracuse for their BIG EAST opener. The results weren't as good as the first two trips as the Irish failed to score over the final 11:38 of the game on the way to a 16-13 loss to the Orange at the Carrier Dome.
Junior Caitlin McKinney (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) led Notre Dame with four goals and two assists on the afternoon. Jillian Byers (So., Northport, N.Y.) and Meghan Murphy (Sr., Centennial, Colo.) added three goals each. Kaki Orr (Sr., Darien, Conn.) and Jane Stoeckert (So., Mendham, N.J.) rounded out the scoring with two goals each.
Syracuse was led offensively by Ashley Pike who scored five times and Bridget Looney who added four in the Orange victory. Halley Quillinan added three goals while Megan Mosenson scored twice and Katie Rowan and Jill DePetris added one goal each in the win.
The victory improved the Orange to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST while the Irish are now 5-2 for the season and 0-1 in conference play.
