George Washington Rallies for 11-10 Win Over Towson

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Katherine Sampson (Mamaroneck H.S./Larchmont, N.Y.) scored three goals, including two in the second half, as George Washington (3-2) rallied from a four-goal half-time deficit to earn an 11-10 victory over Towson University (2-3) in a non-conference game at the Colonials' Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Colonials jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the first half as juniors Katelyn Honeyford (Moorestown H.S./Moorestown, N.J.) and Kristin Karcsh (Bishop Shanahan H.S./Kennett Square, Pa.) scored goals past Tiger goalkeeper Mandy Corry (West Essex H.S./North Caldwell, N.J.). However, the Tigers recovered and scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 advantage with 5:21 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Meggie McNamara (Fayetteville-Manlius H.S./Fayetteville, N.Y.) tallied two of the Tigers' goals during the spurt.

After Sampson narrowed the margin to 4-3 on a free position goal, the Tigers ended the first half with three straight goals to take a 7-3 lead into the intermission.

Led by Sampson, the Colonials opened the second half by scoring five straight goals over a 19-minute span to regain the lead at 8-7 with 11:39 remaining. Sampson scored two goals during the rally while Honeyford posted a goal and an assist.

Sophomore midfielder Hillary Fratzke (Queen Anne's County H.S./Centerville, Md.) ended the Colonials' run with a goal off an assist from sophomore Julie Ondrako (Fayetteville-Manlius H.S./Manlius, N.Y.) for her third goal of the game with 11:05 left. Senior Shannon Witzel (Pottstown H.S./Pottstown, Pa.) and sophomore Britt Woodfield (South Carroll H.S./New Windsor, Md.) added free position goals to give Towson a 10-8 lead with 8:44 remaining.

However, the Colonials posted three goals in the final six minutes to earn the victory. Sophomore Meghan Cratty (Wilton H.S./Wilton, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal with 5:26 remaining to cut the deficit to 10-9 before senior Molly Gannon (Bishop Ireton H.S./Alexandria, Va.) tied the game with 4:32 left. With 2:35 remaining, freshman Taylor Donohue (Radnor H.S./Villanova, Pa.) took a feed from Honeyford and scored on a high shot past Corry for the eventual game-winning tally.

Honeyford led the Colonials with two goals and two assists while Sampson posted three goals in the victory. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.) made seven saves to earn her third win of the season.

Fratzke led the Tigers with three goals in the loss along with six draw controls. McNamara, who was named as the CAA Co-Player of the Week earlier in the week, scored twice while Corry made 13 saves in a losing effort. It was the Tigers' second straight loss.
