Amherst Tops Eastern Connecticut 14-10 for First Win
CLAREMONT, FL – The Amherst College men's lacrosse team evened its record at 1-1 with a 14-10 win over Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, marking the first of two games that the Lord Jeffs are scheduled to play during their spring break trip in Florida.
The Amherst attack was led by a trio of players scoring three goals apiece, including senior tri-captain Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY), who picked up four points on the day to move his season total to nine.
Six Amherst players picked up multiple points on the day, with sophomore Brett Miller (Wantagh, NY) scoring a goal and adding three assists to join Cherney with four points. First-year Tom McDonnell (Manhasset, NY) and senior tri-captain Chris Hofmann (New Canaan, CT) each netted three goals, while sophomores Tim Thornton (Garden City, NY) and Tom Foote (Newton, MA) each scored a goal, adding two assists and one assist, respectively.
Amherst out-shot the Warriors 41 to 24 on the day, allowing sophomore Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) to record 18 saves for the win. The Jeffs also won the face-off battle, taking 15 of 23 draws.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Thursday, when they will conclude their spring break trip with a game against St. Lawrence University at 1:00 p.m.
